Judging at Competitions

I'm not getting any more involved in this discussion than I need to, but for the record Anita is ALSO related to some of the dancers currently on Empire and "Meistro" should know who she is, they have met in the past. She is not some "made up" character.

I don't get it, was she a failure of a troll or she thought random accusations would fly on BTF?

So back to the discussion of "Judging At Competitions"...

What competitions have had great judging, and why? Was it because of a rubric, the choice of judges, variety of judges, a mix of both? Even better than hypotheses of what would make judging better, let's look at past good examples and use them.

By not refuting it, you pretty much are agreeing with it... I know I'm not involved, but you can't come on here and talk some smack without backing it up... Anita is someone I'm assuming you know, and if she's wrong, you should be able to call her out and be like, "Empire does not share her views, her views are not reflective of the team whatsoever"... See I even did it for you... If you can do something as challenging as bhangra, you can type out those simple words... I believe in Empire...

How bout at the banquet/team mixer/dinner/meetngreet shindig, the captains sit with the judges/headjudge for dinner. that way the captains get to know them, they can all discuss in a positive manner what aspects will be stressed in everyones performances, whos looking for what exactly, yada yada etc etc brrruah

and dont keep judges in the same hotel, so that theres no chance of running into them in 'off hours', no captain spends extra time that others didnt get to spend with a judge, etc.

also, i personally feel its better if the judges are spread out and in random locations in the auditorium, not in a single file line halfway up the auditorium or directly in front of the stage either. wat do yall think?

Bad idea. I can't think of a worse idea than facilitating schmoozing between teams and judges. Also it's too late to change your dance, throw in some sialkoti or a mirza segment, so what's the point? If you want like a 10 min meeting + Q&A, ok at least it's not schmoozing.

True. It is too late to change the dance on the day of, or the day before. This dialogue should occur BEFORE the competition - ie there should be frank dialogue between teams and the organizers so it is clear what the judges are looking for. Releasing judge bio's is always a plus.

Even though it is after-the-fact (placings already announced), clearly getting judge feedback post-show is a huge benefit. Wasn't it at Groundshaker they had instant feedback like American Idol? Or was that Bhangra Idols....in any case, that's only semi-helpful. There needs to be some room for Q/A BEFORE a comp, like a month before, so a team can create/tailor the dance accordingly. Contacting judges before a comp is barely feasible, so you'd have to trust the organizers I guess...trust that they will lay out their expectations for judges.

I do like this idea and I have thought about that too. However I see an upside and a downside to this as well. It's great because you would have judges in random and discreet areas distant from one another getting multiple perspectives of a team's routine, which is great because judge A would see something that judge B did not see being on a balcony third row right. The difference in perspective would add depth and breadth to discussion regarding a teams stage presence/lasting impression, formations/transitions, and execution.
However, while that may be achieved, there would be a wider range of opinion for any given performance. The lack of consistency with regard to WHERE you are seeing the same team could cause for the judges to deliberate for longer periods of time, and may actually facilitate a more intense debate between judges...I think above all, its important for all judges to be on the same page especially if the committee invests so much trust into who they pick. All of the judges should be unified in the final decisions!

wat if we got like proper hard hats for the judges with cameras fixed on the front top, like when u go skydiving (btw u all gota go skydiving, its so legitttt).

then u can get a video from all angles from each judges perspective......and i duno where im goin with this, i gota go eat lunch.

I'm not sure whether they do that or not, but that would be amazing (the birdeye view of formations). Also, that website is full of helpful juding criteria stuff.

And TZ, I was running around looking for you to get my car keys to move my car before parking closed. I'd approach a Sher guy and be like, have you seen TZ? Who? Taiiiiiimur. Who? Taymoooooooor. Who? Teeeeeemur. Who? Tuuuuuumor. Who? Tyyyyymer? Oh. No I haven't seen him. It was like looking for the right key in a bundle of unknown keys. lol

It was Groundshaker, yeah. They critiqued each team on the spott.

I think two separate things are wanted and needed:

+ Knowing ahead of time what is expected, what judges are looking for to place
+ Knowing afterwards how points were awarded, what judges saw and thought, how judges actually judged

What do you guys think of giving the judges the ability to watch videos of teams that performed while they are deliberating? If it is really close between two teams and they can't really remember a specific team, they can watch some of their video to help decide. This would also help teams who go first in the show, because judges do not remember the earlier dances as well. It could be possible if someone on board records each dance and then hooks it up to a tv for judges to watch.

Neil that's an awesome idea. It's like instant replay sort of. I think judges should be able to see 1-2 minutes replayed from a team's performance. This allows them to refresh their memories, and make the right decisions, AND its time sensitive, so that the deliberation ends up being like 15-20 minutes (normal time).
