"The patella tendon / ligament joins the kneecap (patella) to the shin bone or tibia. This tendon is extremely strong and allows the quadriceps muscle group to straighten the leg. The quadriceps actively straighten the knee in jumping to propel the individual off the ground as well as functioning in stabilizing their landing.
As such this tendon comes under a large amount of stress especially in individuals who actively put extra strain on the knee joint such as those who regularly perform sports that involve direction changing and jumping movements. With repeated strain, micro-tears as well as collagen degeneration may occur as a result in the tendon."

i dont know if the condition i had is related in any way, but i had severe issues in my knee back in high school basket and the root of my problem was excessive jumping / the way i landed while jumping in basketball. i had to sit out my freshman year because a fluid would take over my knee to the point where i literally could not bend it. week after week i would have to have it get drained by a doc until i finally just forced myself to not be active at all. took almost 2 months of zero sports activity before i guess it was healed. till this day i still have random episodes of pain in that region of my knee, but its nothing compared to what it was. hopefully what you have now doesnt segway into what i experienced.

i've been getting pain directly below the patella in my right knee since back in march, it's directly related to doing excessive amounts of behtka. never noticed any swelling or stiffness so i think its just a repetitive strain type deal. i stopped doing heavy leg work outs and bhangra for past couple of weeks and it got noticeably better but it flared up again after doing bhangra last night. from what i read in the link i should just lay off excessive exercise and ice it regularly. i started using a cho-pat strap which does make a big difference, i dont feel any pain after activity if i use a strap.

It doesn't sound like u have osgood schlatter if you don't have swelling or extreme bone growth below ur patella. Mine never got better with rest and icing it hurt even more. Also its a hormonal disease dealing with growth spurts in that region...

I think you've diagnosed it pretty well if the pain goes away after rest as just knee strain...

I had something similar called Osgood Schlatter. Work 4 years of my life. Could barely walk without feeling a screeching pain throughout my knee. It got better with age and now it's not as big as a problem as it was in middle school/beginning of high school.

not the same as osgood schlatters. I had OS and it occurs during rigors physical activity, in particular during a growth spurt. Its when your tibia basically gets effed up at the growth plate due to strain on it by the patellar tendon, and it results in a visible bump on your shin (still have mine till this day). It can even result in growth plate damage, so you can even have a slightly smaller height.

Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon itself and can present similar/is treated the same way for the most part. RICE it. Rest Ice Compress Elevate. It can take up to a couple months of NO ACTIVITY with constant icing for it to go away, only to return. THe trick is to return gradually to whatever you were doing, and to stop if it doesnt get better (i was running on a concrete track every afternoon. yeah.).

I concur. If you're not training for any gigs or big competitions right now since its the offseason, the best thing to do is stay off of it. Once you return to training and performing, you can get a brace that fits your knee. What this will do is compress the outer areas of the knee joint to alleviate the pulling that tendon is committed to between the tibia and the patella. The more support you have, the less isolated tension felt just below your knee cap. Also, when training, LIMIT yourself to certain movements once a practice sesson. For instance, if you have 40 behtka in your set, you can do half of them for 1 run through and not do any more behtka. By the time you get on stage, you SHOULD have enough stamina and energy to perform your set with all behtka.

maheep: muscle pain and joint pain are completely different, unless youve torn a muscle, the pain is usually from overuse or overloading and usually you can work through it. joint pain on the other hand is usually cause by some sort of degeneration or inflammation, warming up and stretching doesnt do anything for joint pain.

i'll take the advice given and ice the fuck out of it as much as i can, i've already started to get myself into the habit of wearing a strap constantly. no more behtka for a couple of months; i know impact agitates it so i'm gonna stick to low impact stuff like biking; discussed it with a med buddy who also weight lifts and he agreed that it might help to try to strengthen calves, quads, thighs. i started taking glucosamine chondroitin and that helped it heal faster last time, so gonna stick with that. i'll try to keep the bhangra to a minimum but got couple of weddings this summer and i cant resist, i'll try to convince the dj to play only jhoomer tracks. what gets me everytime is that this problem doesnt bother me while im doin bhangra it starts hurting afterwards. meh at this point i'm just glad it's a tendon issue, not a cartilage, fluid, or arthritis/bone spur issue.

I've been experiencing the same thing since November. Right below the knee, sharp pain when doing betkas. I took a long layoff from bhangra from nov - mid jan and started wearing superfeet in my shoes. I started practicing again and the pain never came back. I lost my shoes that had the insoles for a bit and the pain came back. I got my shoes back, pain went away. (i never practice in shoes, i just wear the insoles in my shoes I wear to class and daily activity) Maybe try this? Superfeet are amazing regardless, anyone reading this should at least take a look at superfeet.com.

My experience, rest + keeping your legs in good shape and wearing proper footwear consistently will go a long way.

I've had similar issues throughout this year. I messed up knee twice now in the past 6 months, and both times I've had fluid swelling under the patella and it keeps the knee from full extension. I consulted a orthopedic surgeon and sports specialists and they diagnosed it as Prepatellar Bursitis. It occurs from excessive extensive and strain (over stressed) on the patella and ligaments. Best thing is to keep low activity on the knee let it heal, icing it regularly of course. You should also wrap it in a warm heated up cloth and do some stretches and leg strengthening exercises, it does help and ice it after the exercises. Having a brace on helps (it helped me while I danced and still experienced pain and swelling still) but don't keep it too long because your muscles in your thighs will get weak. If it keep re-ocuring definitely get it checked out, better to be safe than sorry. Good luck bro. Hope it gets better.

look into some neoprene knee sleeves that will keep some compression on the knees and keep them warm. will probably make a big difference.
