Hello all,

This is the first time I am posting on BTF. My bhangra team is performing at a comp for the first time next month and we were going to create our own khundae. Can someone please tell us the correct dimensions for what the size should be and where we could buy them? (we were looking at bamboo sticks but if something cheaper is out there that would work too).

Also, we are in need of 6 saaps if anyone is selling them or if there is a reliable online website we could use to order them.

We are a new team so we are looking for cheap options as all of this is coming out of pocket.

Thank you guys again

Khunde/Daangs height usually range from around 5 - 5.5 feet and 1 inch in diameter (this can vary depending on material).

Depending on where you live, they can be purchased at multiple stores. A.C. Moore, Home Depot, Lowes, and Super Walmarts may carry them as well.

If you do end up using Bamboo sticks, I advise to be careful when cutting them to desired lengths because they can crack easily.

For saaps, are you looking for regular wooden saaps or plastic ones? Plastic ones usually tend to cost more.

Ok thanks for the dimensions!

And plastic saaps would be ideal because I heard they are easier to use and learn with but it will come down to the price. So most likely I feel like we will be buying wooden saaps but would like to know the price differences between the two if possible.

No problem.

As far as saaps go, I would recommend tradition wooden saaps because plastic ones can be pricey.
DCMPAA website as Karn (above) posted, is probably your best option. They are reliable and the saaps are of good quality.
Another option would be to order them from India, if you know of someone that can purchase and ship them for you. You can get good quality saaps for much cheaper, only thing that may cost you a bit is shipping, but over all it ends up being cheaper. If time is a major factor, then I would recommend purchasing saaps from the DCMPAA website: http://www.dcmpaa.com/#!shop-dcmpaa/c1cnk[/size]

Hey,

5.5ish feet khunde are good, and I would strongly suggest getting bamboo sticks from Home Depot. They have a lot of grip on them (surprisingly), and you can attach roomals/hooks to them to make them look more legit if necessary. In addition, they're extremely cheap ($3.50 per khunda) and last a long time. In terms of shikke, we usually buy them from people in India that we know but shipping costs a lot of money. I would suggest looking for a nearby team and renting saaps for a small price if you only need them for the comp! I know purchasing them costs a lot, but one suggestion I have is to have your dancers buy them separately and then get reimbursed by the team once you get the fundraised money for them.

Sincerely,
Raghav

I've seen another team use the Pier 1 bamboo poles and they're pretty close to getting bamboo knundeymfrom India. They're more thin and breakable but it will look decent on stage. Good choice for your first set. Height should ideally be at the dancer's mouth. (Obviously you'll have to get the average height of all your guys, and average height of your girls if u want slightly shorter ones for them). I think it's great your going to get hooks for them, that will really give more authenticity. Good luck!
