My dear friends,

Since Bhangra Season is picking up very fast in N/America, it's my personal request that if you have pure traditional teams, please try your best to perform with live things - Drummer(s), Singer, Algoze wala, Chimte wala etc to make the things more traditional and avoid using DVDs,cause with the use of that you may loose points. I hope you will try your BEST and make memorable performances in the current year. If you need anything or anyone from Punjab/Chandigarh, please let me know and we will try our Best to bring him there with the necessary legal formalities..

ALL THE BEST !!

There are a decent amount of Live DHOL teams in North America i think the problem is is that these teams dont compete at alot of competitions and some have also been "dissapearing" from the bhangra scene.

Dear Charanjit,

Thank you very much for the inputs.

It sounds GREAT that about 20 teams performing live in US/Canada. Please let me ask you few questions ..Why the remaining teams always try to perform on DVDs
..to save time
..to get best music
..or they have no musicians like dhol players, gud singers, algoze and Bugdhu wallas ??

If you say we can start a camp in almost all the major Universities / Schools of US and Canada to teach all such instruments in a BIG WAY !

In wait of your reply, please.

BEST WISHES !!

Nobody's trained like that in a lot of places. In Georgia nobody is trained to sing or play algozeh and certainly not to dance a live set. Trust me, if we could we would, but we have neither the means nor the training to pull it off even if we had musicians. I would imagine it's the same in other places as well, either lack of musicians, training, or both. Given the chance I'd love to do it tho.

Well...being a part of Shan-e-Punjab Srs. and going live for the first time was very difficult....It was a great challenge to find musicians and side band members that can play the dhol, algozey, chimta, and boliyaan at a high level...many teams in north america cannot go live simply because its hard to find talent here and its not easy to teach someone when you dont have teachers that can play or sing or dance at a high calibar...Our team is apart of an academy (CANADIAN PUNJABI DANCE ACADEMY...head: Narinder Aujla) which made it a lot easier to put together a team...but when it comes to indapendant teams and university teams that are not associated with a bhangra academy then it becomes VERY difficult to put together a dhol team that can compete at a high level...From what i have noticed in Canadian bhangra is that a lot of teams are associated with Academys and dancers perfer traditional bhangra...there is a very large population of Punjabis and indians in places like toronto and vancouver which makes it easier to find dancers...But when you look at the US Punjabis/ Indians are spread throughout the whole country which makes it difficult to not only put together a band for a live team but find dancers also...it is difficult to put together a proper dhol team and it always will be because there just arent enough talented teachers in North America as there are in India to pass on the knowledge and their expertise to the younger generation...

hope i answered your questions.

also, I have only been doing bhangra for about 1.5 years and i have learnt so much but at the same time there is sooo much more to learn and having a coach like Narinder Aujla who is very experienced and knowledgable in this dance it makes a sooo much easier...I would advise anyone who has the opportunity to join an academy to do so no matter what their skill level is because theres still so much you dont know BELIEVE me when i say that

My dear Charanjit !

Thank you very much for the reply.

You are very lucky to have a coach like Mr. Narinder Aujla and I am proud of him as he is popularising the rich punjabi culture, overseas. He is much luckier as he is there with you and serving the students of 'South Asian Commmunity' as much as possible. I personally, wish him ALL THE BEST !

Next, as conveyed by your goodself, students usually prefer to dance on the DVDs due to the lack of musicians there, and my team try our best to give training to all the Bhangra Dancers in almost all the Universities in US and Canada - and just be ready to learn Bhangra, Singing/Bolian, Dhol, Tumbi, Algozey, Chimta, Bughdu etc..

If you or any of your partner have anything to ask, you are WELCOME !

BEST WISHES !!

-AC/Chandigarh.

Throw United Bhangra into the mix. I'm pretty sure they went all live too. I believe I remember they used popular songs too, it was a very entertaining live segment.
