Live Streaming Comps

Does anyone know how to start live streaming bhangra competitions. I know for myself and a lot of other bhangra fans going to each and every bhangra competition is very hard and expensive. If someone wants to look into livestreaming comps let me know. It would be a great way to expose bhangra even more.

I agree with you on this, and would be happy to see it happen but it might honestly cut back on attendance from competitions already. There's been a pretty big dip in comp attendance since around 2011 (probably even farther back) and its slowly increasing. From what I've seen, a lot of people don't think its worthwhile to go to a competition where they have seen the same routine or when they know the video will be posted later down the road (few days to a few weeks.)

Don't get me wrong, live-streaming would certainty boost awareness of bhangra and might even help boost attendance at comps, but it might cause people to be less inclined to attend competitions and therefore hurt ticket sales. It's basically a double-edged sword, in my opinion. Unless you charged for live stream and it was set up by a competition committee, it could be worthwhile to get for those who can't make it to watch the competition because of work, other plans, family, etc... and to extend competition "ticket" sales.

If you are interested in live streaming however there are two ways to go about doing it. One way is to ask the theatre staff if they have the equipment and subscriptions necessary to stream the competition because a lot of theaters do that now.

The other option is to use http://www.ustream.tv or youtube streaming. ustream is probably the better and easier option. There is a way to connect a camera to your laptop, I have only done it with a webcam but if you get a legit camera and sync it to your ustream account you can broadcast it live.

I think in terms of ticket sales the best thing to do is to not release the link until maybe an hour before the show but let families of dancers know because some cannot come from long distances.

There are many variables that come into play when we decide to stream a show.

1. Does the committee want it?
2. Does the venue have an adequate internet backbone
3. Does the venue have any broadcast fee's in place

What many people fail to realize, many of these venue's will charge you thousands to live-stream their "production" and that is simply not worth the hassle. They have lighting engineers, sound engineers, and then people backstage that help "run" the show. Sure you can have someone sitting in the audience using an LTE connection on their smart phone, but then you run into data issues, and quality issues. If you're planning on live-streaming a show, I highly recommend you contact the organizing committee so they're aware of it, else it may cause legal issues with them and the venue staff down the road.
