He was! It happened like the first day or something...really sad.siddyp said:damn. this guy wasn't an Olympic luger was he?
yeah unfortunately he was siddy. he was representing the country of George in luge and this accident happened during one of his last scheduled training sessions. he was going anywhere from 80-90 mph when he hit that pole ... it's so hard to watch that.siddyp said:damn. this guy wasn't an Olympic luger was he?
He past away the day before olympics, during training.Pooja said:He was! It happened like the first day or something...really sad.siddyp said:damn. this guy wasn't an Olympic luger was he?
It's all on the same track. VANOC moved the mens start down to the women's start line which reduces max speed to about 140km/hour. During the women's training runs there were still some crashes so VANOC decided to move the women's start down another 200 metres. They also extended the wall where the Georgian luger hit the pole to the point where it's fully covered now and changed the ice at that turn a little bit. The track is considered elite but investigation concluded that the luger was having problems and due to his inexperience compared to the more elite lugers resulted to his death.Manjot said:The track itself was considered "Elite" because of the speed and some sharp turns I think...correct me if im wrong but didn't they move the mens luge to women luge track and then move the women to the juniors track?...it was on the day of the opening ceremonies. Poor guy =\

His funeral was today too, and his body is now on a plane to Georgia. RIP
yeah. they all react so nonchalantly. the poor guy didnt even have a chance, that crash into the pillar probably broke most of the bones in his body.Meistro said:The reactions of all the athletes in the article are horrible.
Yeah their reactions are horrible, you'd think they'd have a little more compassion. Its good that the guy at least died pretty rapidly though, surviving an injury like that (or having a more drawn out death) would have so painful. Its such a shame he was only 21 though.. Poor guy.sb123 said:yeah. they all react so nonchalantly. the poor guy didnt even have a chance, that crash into the pillar probably broke most of the bones in his body.Meistro said:The reactions of all the athletes in the article are horrible.
My biggest issue with the ceremony was the fact that it was indoor... This is the winter olympics, it should be outdoors... I know Vancouver folks are considered the pansies of Canada, and I mean that in the nicest way possible, but come on, indoor ceremony? There would be a riot in Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal or Toronto if the festivities were indoor...Romy said:I agree with the poles should of been padded or the wall should of been higher but I don't agree with you Vick with the Ceremonies being boring. People shouldn't be comparing these opening ceremonies with China's as their budget was atleast 10 times more and Summer Olympic Ceremonies are usually more extravagant as well. Yes we had that glitch at the end, but what's an extra minute or two and there were back up plans put in place as well for mistakes.
With the several delays, sucks that our weather hasn't been cooperating lately for the venues. The zamboni only broke down once, of my knowledge, and actually it's one of the most greenest zamboni's out there. The problem was fixed and the event went on. However, melting snow up in Cypress resulted in 8000 tickets for General Admission (Standing Only) section being cancelled for the Snowboard cross events, and fog up in whistler resulting in postponed events. HOWEVER, weather is supposed to be nice and sunny for the upcoming week. Unusually warm though, but it won't be raining atleast.
You guys just have to be here to really experience what's going on in Vancouver. Yes there have been glitches, delays and what not but that happens at every Olympics. Some are more criticized and publicized than others. Turin had problems with transportation issues, Beijing had problems with fake tickets, Olympic torch protests & blockades, and seats not being filled. Just watch, as the olympics get going things will get better. I was in downtown yesterday, and the atmosphere was amazing! So many things to do, so many people, and it's truly breathtaking.
It wasn't outdoor because we don't have a large enough outdoor facility that can facilitate 60 000 people safely and all of the athletes/performers/pyrotechnics etc. And to build a new one would cost way too much. Besides, it was pouring rain outside Friday night so thankfully it was indoors. No one was cold or wet. =]Vick said:My biggest issue with the ceremony was the fact that it was indoor...
