Hello Everyone,
We are very happy that we got so much love and support as a Third year competition!! We want to congratulate all the placing teams and thanks everyone who made this Competition a great success!!

We tried our best to make this show possible but there is always room for improvement and who better to ask than you guys for some feedback. We wanted to know if you guys can write some reviews and give us some feedback that can help us get better in the years to come.

Thank You again for a great weekend! We hope you guys had a great time!!

This was my second year competing at this competition (last year with Nachdi Jawani, this year with TAG) and i must say i was very impressed. Congratulations to Pind Productions and Gary Khehra for putting on an amazing show, committee made sure we were we'll taken care of. Here's my review of this year:
Mixer:
We'll organized, didn't run to late, games were fun and teams got the chance to get to know each other

Hotel:
Not as good as last year, but i don't blame the committee its hard getting hotels with the amount of ruckus that teams cause after the competition. All teams were given time to do run throughs but this wasn't very effective because i was playing dhol with my hands and i got told off by one of the hotel managers for doing this saying I'm waking everybody up when my team could barely hear the dhol, regardless Gary was there and immediately took control of the situation, competitions in the future should consider finding space for teams to do a run through with the team being able to play dhol or music at a decent level, not like we were doing an all out or anything but still.

Show:
Venue was the same as last year, must say it was amazing, Show i believe started on time or a little bit later but didn't really bother me. There was a section for performers to sit and watch which i thought was amazing because now a days competitions don't let performers watch or you have to buy a ticket to watch. Only issue i had was with the mics, for some reason the theeli just wasn't heard as we'l as the dhagga, last year levels were sounding way better but thats the engineers fault not the committee.

Judges:
Wow, an amazing set of judges. The amount of knowledge these judges had thrilled me, all 3 judges knew what they were talking about in every aspect of the rubric and bhangra in general, also gave some really good feedback after the show and before to show to all captains regarding what they are looking for, would encourage any competition to hire the 3 judges from this year and the 3 from last year!

Overall an amazing experience at the competition, best of luck to the committee for next year, really hope to see this competition continue considering its the possibly the only folk bhangra competition alive in the circuit.

This was our first time at MCB, and we absolutely loved it! Below is our review:

Prior to Arrival
We were accepted to the competition one week before the competition, so it was pretty hectic on my end getting everything together and going through the university bureaucracy. Gary was unbelievably good during this whole process. He was available 24/7 via text, and any question I had, he answered very quickly and efficiently. There was never a moment that he didn’t know what was going on—he knew every little thing about the competition, and this was a huge help in preparing for it. We ended up booking the hotel next door to the team hotel, but this wasn’t a big deal since they were literally five seconds from each other.
Mixer
Great mixer—there was a nice judges performance, and then the teams got together and performed as well (three people from each team). Food was absolutely amazing (Indian food), and there was a videographer taping the whole event (along with a backdrop for pictures). Overall an amazing time and one of the best mixers we have been to. It didn’t run late, and was well organized. After the mixer, there was a judges meeting for all the captains which was very helpful for all last-minute questions.
Tech Time
There was a slight delay in Tech Time, but it didn’t make that big of a difference. Everything was set up and in order for tech time. There were 10 minutes of tech time, which was enough to practice setting up efficiently and do a full run-through.
Practice Space
There were two primary practice spaces—after the mixer, each team got a small (about 3/5ths the size of the stage) area in the hotel to practice for around half an hour. We couldn’t play the dhol here, but it was nice to have this space reserved for us and to not fight with any other teams for the space. In addition, there was a communal practice space before/after tech time. There were about three teams sharing a large room, which was enough for each time to go over choreo in a small part of the room and have the dholis take turns playing.
Competition and Show
Venue was absolutely beautiful. Show started a little late, but really not a big deal. All boys were in the aforementioned large practice area tying paghs, and the girls were in dressing rooms. It was really nice to have everyone getting ready in the same area because it allowed us to help each other with pagha (shoutout to my boy Harry from GMU for tying the best pagh on me) and easily borrow starch, freeze-spary, etc. The show itself was flawless, and there was a judges performance right after the show. Gary and Pind Productions were excellent MCs, and our liaison (Krupa) was absolutely amazing [case and point, she got us tons of Gatorade and bananas at like 1 AM the night before the performance]. Performers were easily allowed to enter the balcony from backstage, so that let us watch other performances as well. Our dholi loved the setup since he was mic-ed well and there were studio monitor speakers on the stage for him. Stage dimensions were provided in detail by Gary before the competition, so there was no confusion when it came to that.
Judging
To reiterate what Jasraj said, the judging panel was amazing (see here http://motorcitybhangra.net/judges-2014/). They all had significant experience with folk Bhangra teams, and truly epitomized what this competition stood for. They followed the rubric very well, and afterwards, had an in-depth judging meeting that gave us critiques that were so detailed we had never heard of them before. Would definitely suggest other competitions hire these judges to gain a different perspective on Bhangra in the judging process.
After Party
For captains, going to the after-party was a little rushed since we got out of the captains meeting very late. The venue also closed kind of early (around 2 AM) and was kind of squished, but that was definitely an issue with the venue itself (not with the organization of the afterparty). One thing I loved about this (and about the comp in general) was that they provided really nice shuttles for going from the hotel to the performance venue and back, and also from the hotel to the after-party and back. The bus ride itself was a party, and we really enjoyed meeting other teams at the afterparty.
Overall
An unbelievably amazing experience. This was our first time at a competition that focused so heavily on folk Bhangra, and our team absolutely loved it. We received critiques from the judges that we never heard in the past from non-traditionaly judges, and these critiques will really help us in the competitions to come. We really appreciate Gary’s undying flexibility in accommodating us on such a short notice. The other teams at the competition inspired members of our team to keep our performances traditional and be ambassadors of traditional Bhangra as it began. The organizers had a vision and a passion that was translated throughout the years and is extremely well executed, and this vision is what makes MCB a very unique competition unlike any other.
Would definitely love to come back next year!
Sincerely,
Raghav

Pretty much agree with what everyone said above. This was Alamo City's first time at MCB and it was absolutely amazing!

Just one thing I would like to see next year is a pre comp judges meeting/google hangout to clear any concerns prior to the comp.

Congratulations to Gary and the rest of the organizers for putting on a great show!

Definitely one of the best MCB's so far, starting from the mixer to the after party. The organizers, the committee, and the teams put on a great show this year!

The whatsapp group:
Very helpful because we got the chance to talk to judges before comp weekend. We also got to know the other captains a bit, unlike other comps.

Mixer:
On point- food, games, timing, line up selection process.

Hotel: rooms were spacious, free breakfast, no complaints.
Practice space after mixer (in the hotel): good enough. Only thing was that the committee pushed our time earlier, which was a good thing in our case (otherwise it would have been after 12am).

Tech time:
Leaving for tech time was convenient because we had shuttle buses waiting right outside the hotel.
15 minutes would have been better to figure out lighting cues along with set up and a 8+ Minute run thru. But it was not bad getting it done in 10 or so minutes.

Show:
Had issues with lighting people but Gary took care of it for us, thank you Gary!
Performances were on time, no technical mishaps, everything went smooth.

Judges:
All three judges were very knowledgeable about folk versus modern bhangra and gave us very helpful feedback; not just about our set but things like props which not many judges care to talk about. And even though they spoke mostly in punjabi, they were very good at getting their point across to all teams.

After party: ended abruptly due to some people fighting with the bar tenders, but was fun while it lasted!

Again, this was one of the best MCBs organization wise!
Thank you Gary and all who made it possible!

Shout out to our liasion, Amber Samra, for being super helpful and supportive the entire weekend :)

Hello everyone,

A Tad bit late on this one… lol. We had absolutely an amazing time at MCB3! –and we are still experiencing post-comp withdrawals :( Jasraj pretty much mentioned everything we wanted to say about the weekend, but we just wanted to add a little bit more on to his review.

Above all, the best part about the weekend for us was not only performing on that stage, but being a part of something that had a true motive. The strive to preserve the essence of our Punjabi Virsa and the art of folk bhangra was truly refreshing and culturally elevating. From dedicating the comp to Bhagat Singh, to the slogan, to the mixer dress code, and the Bhangra rubric itself was all very well thought and complimented the motive very well. It was definitely more than just a bhangra competition, it was a strive to keep our culture alive, and that day, we all won in keeping our culture alive.

A huge shoutout to Gary Saab for being so accommodating throughout the whole weekend. Even though we didn’t feel the same enthusiasm from our Liaison, we had gotten that much more love from Gary, and we want to thank him for that. Lastly, a shoutout to an amazing set of judges -Hardeep Singh Sahota, Fauji Singh, and Brinderjit Singh. The amount of knowledge they have had thrilled us and has definitely deepened our knowledge about bhangra.

Overall, TAG had an amazing experience, and encourage every team to apply! Good luck to the committee next year, and a hats off to another successful show MCB committee.
