MCB Competition Review

The committee did an awesome job hosting all the teams and were very helpful every step of the way. I can't thank Gary enough and our liaisons Dilpreet & Keisha for being with us the whole time. Giving teams 2 liaisons is really clutch in helping get things done. The liaisons stayed with us throughout the entire weekend and made sure we got lunch dinner and made extra food runs for my "pukhi" team the whole weekend!

Gary you did an amazing job my man! The venue was beautiful and going around personally all weekend to make sure that teams had what they want? ON POINT BROTHER! You ran tech time as smooth as I've seen it run in years of being on the circuit. Congratulations to Virsa: Our Tradition, Shan-E- Punjab Seniors and Nachdi Jawani for putting on tremendous performances and their respective placings!

I think the placings were pretty much on point and I wont get into who should've and who didn't place. I just didn't like the discrepancies between what the judges said at the meeting and how they actually judged us. I would hope that none of these 4 judges are brought back next year and are replaced with "FOLK" judges but ones who have at least an idea of the way bhangra has evolved in the states! Thats all I will say about the judges. Being an organizer I understand that the organization can't do anything about the results or the Judges but you can redeem yourselves by making a few tweaks every year.

P.S. IVE SAID IT BEFORE, WE NEED A BANNED JUDGING LIST FROM THIS CIRCUIT  NO SHORTAGE OF GOOD, SOLID, FOLK & MODERN JUDGES !!!!! 8) ;) :p

MCB is a fairly new competition, and things can't be expected to always run smoothly. With experience and feedback, the competition will get better. However, i am a big fan of traditional bhangra and I love how the MCB committee is making an effort to preserve traditional (asli) bhangra. Personally, i believe that we need more competitions that judge based on traditionally so that actual bhangra can be preserved. Keep up the good work :) :) :)

I'm going to be 'that' guy and say that the growing tensions and perhaps all out war is going to lead to some healthy competitive bhangra.

honestly great to see Virsa somewhat relevant after 3 years, but check what AEG has done for the circuit in those 3 years bringing home trophies from every major competition that has lasted, its great that virsa placed, but compare your one trophy to AEG's 10 in the past 3 years and then talk about how the circuit has changed. And if you really think what virsa does is comparable to DAV then you are mistaken, and that queens college education isn't doing you right. The circuit is nothing as to what it was 3 years ago you idiot.

You seem to know more about the lifestyle of dangars and janvars than we do so we'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one. Personally, we've never seen bhandars do bhangra though. #Interesting #BucketList

Karan and Sargam are masterminds. Shoutout to them for consistently making some of the sickest mixes this circuit has seen. We'll send you the MCB mix just PM us!

Yo I agree bro, I also loved their past sets when they used dandia, yoyos, frank sinatra, glow in the dark lasers, ribbons, etc. I also remember one time they used V for Vendetta masks... or was that Virsa? Na can't be Virsa... you guys are too folk! #Duhhhhh

We actually have no idea who you are. We are going to write this off as a groupie post and leave it at that.

Once again, congrats to Virsa, Shan-E, and Nachdi. Yea, we've had some concerns about the judging and what not but we are by no means discrediting any team. On the bright side, glad to see some competitive life back in Bhangra.

Sincerely,

Satnam shri waheguru. First of all, congrats to the MCB committee, and i know Gary personally, so congratulations to him! Second of all congrats to my first place team Virsa: Our Tradition & Shan-e-Punjab. Now that two of the most relevant things have been done, I.e. congratulating the committee and the teams. Everyone else should do the same, until then, good bye bad boys.

+1 -- This made my night haha

Anyways, Bhangra was, is, and always will be a traditional dance.

Using lasers as a daang segment is quite the gimmick but it would have been nicer if you could see at least some of the lasers....
Yes, AEG sets are quite intriguing but when majority of your sets are repeated with a few segments changed and your gimmicks are taken from previous sets (not all but many); it loses it originality.

Yes, Bhangra has changed over the years, but replacing the original traditional Khunde/Daangs with lasers ruins the purpose of keeping things "traditional."

If you are going to a competition in which you have had an idea of who the judges are via competition website/BTF, then a team would be wise enough to decide whether or not to drop out. Wanting to ban "solid folk/modern judges" is outrageous. Just because a judge believes in traditional folk bhangra only or modernized bhangra only does not mean they should be banned from judging.

Looks like the beef between 2 prominent New York teams has re-sparked. All good, it's healthy, if played with sportsmanship. The personal jabs need to stop. Grow up and take it out of the public eye. You guys have issues, deal with it like men, this is for both sides. You have our YOUTH in here reading this, realize the responsibility you hold.

This is childish guys I completely agree with Harjot. There are enough competitions on the circuit for everyone to be sucessful. You win some you lose some keep it classy.

And I also think its a great idea to have a list of weak judges ones that are bias or just arent good at completing the task at hand, that way comps know who not to bring out and teams dont have to worry about their efforts going to waste.

I agree! And I think AEG has clearly proven time after time how great they are. Innovative ideas, crazy mixes, entertainment incorporated into their dancing is what makes them one of the greats

Whether it's staying folk, being modern, or a hybrid team, we all have the same passion ... Just like to present it in different ways ;D

I don't think that banning judges or anything like that is really necessary. I just wish the judges were more consistent across the board. In the judges meeting on Friday night we talked about a lot of the ways that teams could get point deductions. For example, mishandling of props (over-extending/breaking saaps), vardi malfunctions (poorly tied chadre/paagan), not placing down props in a consistent and respectful manner, etc.

I know we made sure to stress things like this during our practice time, but it seems like a lot of other teams didn't do those small things and got away with it. Not to point fingers but Virsa, who had a great performance by the way, broke two saaps in the first 30 seconds of their routine.

Considering the emphasis on props/vardi/clean transitions during the judges meeting, I was honestly a little surprised.

No doubt, Shan-e Punjab and Virsa were two of the more folk teams at the competition. But I felt like the judges conveyed that the competition would be based on execution, rather than being more limited to how folk the routine was.

There needs to be a technical rubric for all competitions. It should list all the possible deductions, and the exact values. That way teams understand what the rules are. I'm fine with deductions for broken saaps, but it should be enforced consistently. Making an actual rubric just for deductions helps that.
