Found this on Gibb's dhol pages website from Nahar Singh's jhummar article

http://www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~hcritz/dholpages/jhummarweb2.html

tere hatth maahi de gaana chhohra

ve raavi vaalRia chhohra (x2)

tere sarge lahira~

ve raavi vaalRia chhohra (x2)

teri kuRti kumbara~ paaeea~

ve raavi vaalRia chhohra (x2)

tere chole paila~ paaeea~

ve raavi vaalRia chhohra (x2)

teri jutti lahira~ paaeea~

ve raavi vaalRia chhohra (x2)

tere hatth maahi de gaana chhohra

ve raavi vaalRia chhohra (x2)

[The song mentions various article of clothing worn by the "Ravi-style boys," like their long shirts, shoes, and bracelets.]

If anyone has time can they do a better translation? Thanks :)

Sorry to burst the party bubble here, but I think it is important to point out that this thread is popular when it shouldnt be.

I think we should spend less time translating the meanings of our language, and emphasizing the learning of our language to younger kids. This was so depressing to look at, just because it has been well recieved when people should realize that this speaks more to the lack of true cultural ties that exist in our culture today.

Disappointed,

wuts ur deal, wuts ur deal, wuts ur deal!!! no one cares if ur disappointed. why do u always put down ppl? srsly stop or get off of btf. ur comment is very narrow minded b/c how do u noe we're not teaching our bros and sis punjabi? false accusations. u need to stop putting down ppl, b/c srsly ur actually putting down urself. bolanh to pehlan soch laya kar. dun get me wrong u have great ideas but ur way of expressing them is wrong. ;)

anyway, thanx for the translations. i love how poetic our boliyan are and they show how artistics punjabies can be. and i also had an opportunity to learn new boliyan since i'm new to this whole competetive bhangra thing. great job parhar and keep it up! ;)

That doesn't make sense. If we don't understand the meaning of words in Punjabi, how can we teach it to anyone else? Isn't it a good thing that people here want to understand the words to the bolis/songs they dance to? Not saying this is the only way to understand the language by any means, but people on this forum are interested in gidha and bhangra, so that is the mode through which they come in contact with the Punjabi language. You've argued other places how much Punjabi songs emphasize the wrong things and that people shouldn't laud these songs - how will they know that the songs talk about alcohol/beating women/etc. if they don't understand the words?

Okay so this next request is a really popular one and I've heard like a billion different versions of it. Are all the different versions the same basic idea or do they all have different meaning behind them? It's at 3:19

By the way, good job PPA that was a pretty sick performance.

And this one at 2:15. Hmm, I've never heard this one before though, the singer is pretty good, finally get to hear someone different besides Pappi Gill all the time lol.

I agree with the previous post...I think it's really important to translate songs. I can first-handedly say that I've seen that bhangra does not mean as much if the words are unknown. Whether the wording itself is an issue, it is secondary to understanding what the wording means.
I think understanding Punjabi is essential for anyone who really loves Bhangra.

anyway, great idea for this thread.
