Mixing Tutorials- Promo Vid (Swizzee)

I know this video is super lame, but I promise the tutorials will be much better quality.

A long project of mine has been to do a set of tutorials to teach people how to mix. I truly believe that if everyone can mix a little bit, we'll all have better music. And for anyone who does team mixes, working with people who can mix is a blessing cause it makes everything easier. It's time for me to pass on my experience and give back to the new peeps who want to learn.

• The goal is to teach people interested in mixing what they need to know. We'll start with simple concepts like beat matching, pitch shifting and cutting up sounds. Then we'll dive into mixing concepts like layering, EQ, and compression.

• The videos are going to be fluid, so based on the comments and questions for the vids I'll do new videos addressing those topics.

• I'd like to have other DJs contribute as well, so that we have a wide range of experience to draw from.

• There is no focus on a specific program, although I will of course have to use one to teach (I'll split between acid and ableton). But the tutorials will be generic and focused on concepts so any program can be used. I'll also use guest DJ spots to teach specific programs like reason, mixcraft, logic pro, etc.

There are a ton of options out there for people to learn how to mix. But I believe that my focus on getting people started, is what will make these vids so useful. A combination of conceptual mixed with practical. Enough to get any team captain going on a gig mix.

The goal is to get everyone able to make simple mixes so that the truly interested can become awesome DJs.

Great idea Swi, looking forward to seeing everything you and others have to offer. I think this will help a lot of us (myself included) clean up our mixes and personally realize potential blind spots that need to be addressed.

Thanks for the support, could you elaborate which vocal you mean? The notorious jatt vocal is really just turned down and brought back in (and it sounds like he threw in a high-cut filter as he turned the volume down, but really it's just the volume that matters). The english vocals are hard to say. I'm not sure he did anything except put a backspin on the end to transition it out.

Would love to follow along depending how how "basic" you can make it. For example, someone such as myself has never mixed in their LIFE nor every installed any type of mixing program before (Acid, Virtual DJ, FL Studio [Fruit Loops], etc.)


Not sure how quickly this will climb up on skill level, but if you're really going to emphasize beginners, I'll be trying to experiment!

Thanks for the support, could you elaborate which vocal you mean? The notorious jatt vocal is really just turned down and brought back in (and it sounds like he threw in a high-cut filter as he turned the volume down, but really it's just the volume that matters). The english vocals are hard to say. I'm not sure he did anything except put a backspin on the end to transition it out.

i never thought of it like that lol i just though it was EQ'd. another example is the tumbi in notorious jatt at the start.

At it's most basic it's just a frequency sweep. Listen to it, at the beginning the high frequencies are muted and you can slowly here the band sweep frequencies. There are a bunch of ways to produce this effect, I can't say for certain which was used but you could do this yourself by setting an EQ band and simply automating it's movement (i.e. automate the frequency it's centered around).
