muslims don't do bhangra. astaghfirullah.
When watching this video I couldn't help but notice how similar the man sounded to a strict Muslim. Dancing in public or for show is looked down upon in stricter Islamic circles. Some hardcore Muslims will actually use the same logic that "ay hinduaya dey kaam aan", ofcourse I don't agree but its interesting to note that in Islam, 'dance & music' is always associated with Hinduism for some reason. Another similarity that struck me was his emphasis on wrestling as that was also one of Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) favorite past time and Muslims are encouraged to wrestle as a hobby as it is a 'sunnah' of the Prophet (pbuh).
This is why we had a wrestling segment in our mundey's dance in 2003-4 :)
dear saleem,
please stop using every possible opportunity to plug cornell bhangra 2002-2006
love

Dear Meryum,
If you saw us wrestling onstage, you'd realize it wasn't a plug.
Warm Regards,

For every 100 people that love bhangra, you have one these that dont... You just gotta let it in one ear and out the other... Who is this guy anyways? Is he easily approachable? I challenge Meistro to bust out in a bhangra move while in this guys presence... that would be interesting...

These are members of the AKhand Keertani JAtha (AKJ), i know alot of them and yes alot of AKJs do think this way. One day we were having a Sikh Day Parade in downtown Atlanta to make the public aware of Sikh and Punjabi culture and the night before we got a call from members of this Jatha pretty much ordering us to not do bhangra or bring a dhol. Anyways, we explained our intentions to a couple of them and we had an extremely successful parade with a group of people playing dhol and doing bhangra on a tractor and flatbed haha.

They do make some good points, but I dont see anything wrong with bhangra itself. I do see problems in how some people use bhangra as an excuse to drink, but bhangra does not have to be a bad thing. Its a great way to spread our culture.
