there is no "jacking" in bhangra anymore as far as i'm concerned...steal, use other teams' shit, just make sure your set is hot...
I'd have to disagree with this one Faizan! It depends on the team and the kind of image/reputation you want.. since you don't really get any money or real fame from doing bhangra all you pretty much have is your reputation and respect.. personally I wouldn't want to be part of a team that is known for heavily copying other teams just to get a win.. originality and hard work is such a great feeling. If you steal that's desperate and shows how unskillful the team really is and you will kill most of your fan base because that's not even fun to watch, there's nothing to look forward to if a team is just going to steal ideas. Most of all, it's not even fun for YOURSELF if your just going to leech off other teams.. might as well not do bhangra and just put your time to better use.

that's why I don't think NJ intended to steal because they know the level their reputation is at.. why risk it for just 1 or 2 moves.. creepy coincidence for sure though.. were the moves performed exactly the same way? If so then I think it should be looked into because thats unfair for Virsa.

Harman, I agree with everything you said. Allow me to clarify:

by jacking i really meant taking a move, concept, idea and making it better AND I ALSO meant full-on stealing of a single move or at most two/three (as long as the move is not a "Signature move" (like nypd's slowmotion stuff, that's all yours). There is a fine-line here, and it's easy to jack and lose respect, but you can also jack and gain respect, or do it to send a message.

but, mirror image stealing for the sake of stealing, or "heavily copying" as you put it, is completely unacceptable. So for example: even if NJ stole the moves, I wouldn't be pissed or care, because their set was nasty and I doubt bad-faith was involved. But if NJ took three moves, or five, or just reused an idea without changing (and this was done set after set), it would be an issue.

Bottom line, don't steal moves or ideas in bad faith, it makes your team look stupid. Further, if a team straight up sucks, and steals shit, they still won't go anywhere and won't get respect, so fuck em anyway...

i think this is a good convo to have, and deserves a thread-split to avoid polluting nj's thread. Again, great job NJ! Always have been, and always will be my favorite bhangra team of all time...

haha i will DEF say this though, if 99% of other teams "coincidently" had the same gimmick as another well known team, they would be accused of jacking shit immediately, whereas people are very quick to give jawani the benefit of the doubt. i am giving them the benefit of the doubt as well, but just sayin i could see this going the complete other way for other teams haha

Completely agreed. NJ is nasty, but sorry, no team is exempt. Honestly, it looks jacked to me. If it was only one of the gimmicks, then it could have been passed as a coincidence, but the fact that it was both of them in addition to Sumeet's original argument that these aren't "derived"/"obvious" gimmicks makes me think that NJ jacked V:OT.

And the khundey phumania is very similar to the Sher Foundation one from Bruin 2008. Sure, people are gonna jump bandwagon and start doing bhangra steps with props now, but seriously, there are so many ways you can do phumania with a khundey, yet the SF and NJ ones are very similar in their not-so-obvious deviations (khundey spins + backward phumania spin). I truly hope that NJ isnt getting lazy with choreo/running out of ideas because the execution is definitely starting to get weaker. :/

EDIT: Failed quote.

To be honest, I preferred the set they did at masti last year :s the only thing I really liked was the first bit of movement with the katos that was cool but the rest of the stuff with the saaps and other unique movements in my opinion looked awkward rather than impressive. Also, ideas are obviously being exhausted when two unrelated teams use two of the same gimmicks at different competitions (I'm referring to virsa at bayside). Obviously what won it for them was the majoritive cleanliness although there were some messier moments but the quality of the dancing also as always was great but I think this time around the wow factor stuff just felt forced and not a part of the routine. I duno :s I've always been a firm believer that jw is one of the best teams in NA but this just didn't hit the <3 button for me.

Congrats to jw on the win.

This is very similar to what I wanted to write. Congrats on the first, I thought everyone danced well but the cleanliness wasn't up to normal JW standards. Actually by "normal" I just mean Masti 4, that still stands as one of the cleanest/most energetic/illest bhangra performances I have seen and much of my respect for JW comes from that performance. I guess Im always eager to slap the "perfection" label on this team since that Masti4 was flawlessss. This is still early in the season so you guys will clean up fast Im sure, but this performance didn't pop as much for me as Masti 4. Some very interesting footwork and stop-and-go motions in this routine - loved the creative choreo! Saap throwing to extend it and catch it and kato movements were siiiick. Daanng phumnia was interesting but seemed very mild to me. You guys had impeccable energy in the end - spellbinding. Backwards-facing dancing is tyyyyyte and the way the jodi's "animate" each other in multiple parts here really made this an exciting performance. Congrats on the first!!!

This. Wasn't as clean as their usual sets
