What do you guys think? Who do you think came out on top, and came out the worst
Winners:
1. Portland Trailblazers: how do these guys keep on doing it? How did they manage to grab Bayless from the Indiana Pacers? In my opinion, Bayless was the second best pure PG in the draft next to Derrick Rose. Many people like Westbrook and Gordon over him, but both of those guys are more combo guards, whereas Bayless is a true PG. They managed to pick up Bayless who is defintely an upgrade over Jarret Jack, and managed to gain Ike Diogu for an expendable Jack as mentioned. If your a NBA fan, there is no other roster that scares you as much as the Trailblazers in 3 years. With Bayless, Roy, Webster, Aldridge, and Oden all growing, maturing and playing together, you have the scariest lineup in the entire assoication. Look for Portland to package Frye and maybe webster/ blake, to get that everyday defensive stopper at the 3.
2. Memphis Grizzlies: After the Gasol trade, I had no faith in this organization, but now things seem to be going up. The Grizz traded the 5th pick (K. Love) Miller, and two other players, for the main piece coming back which is OJ Mayo. OJ Mayo is a special talent. This guy had many people in Miami debating whether to pick him over Beasley, which shows you how much people think of this guy, he is a franchise player. You combine him with Gay and Conley, you have the best all around 1-3 in the NBA in 3 years. Remember, all 3 of those guys are better than average defenders, which wins championships. THE WEIRDEST THING ABOUT THIS GASOL TRADE: The Grizz pick up their franchise guy, and have ENORMOUS amounts of cap space left. They could make a big run for the big names out there including Brand, Ellis or Marion (if he opts out). They also probably will package Lowry and another player to get an inside presence.
3. Toronto Raptors: why are they winners? Because they dooped the Pacers. The Raptors held the 17th pick, which in addition to TJ Ford and Rasho Nestorovic was traded to the Pacers for Jermaine O'neal. The 17th pick, Roy Hibbert will never amount to anything in the NBA. This guy is a project. A 7'2' mammoth who lacks the lateral quickess, and overall game to start in the NBA. I think the Pacers valued this pick before the draft more, since the likes of Robin Lopez, and Jason Thompson were expected to be available. But with the Suns and Kings picking up these guys, they were left with a chump who is a Brandon Haywood at best, but most likely a Wang Zhi Zhi. The Raptors essentially trade for a 6 time all star, albeit an injury prone all-star, for an equally injury prone 0 time all-star.
Other Winners:
NJ Nets- getting Brock Lopez, a top 5 player at #10, and unloading Jefferson for Yi on the same day, a pretty good day. Obviously clearing out space for the summer of 10. Anyone smell Jay-Z and Lebron for the Brooklyn Nets?
Clippers: Although I like Bayless over Gordon, they picked up their guard for the future (obviously they feel livingston wont be the same) but I really like their 2nd round steal in DeAndre Jordan, who is a guy that could have gone mid teens.
Losers:
1. Minnesota Timberwolves: So the worst front office in the league strikes again. First it was giving up Brandon Roy for Randy Foye, then it was drafting Corey Brewer who plays the same position as Foye. Now its giving up a franchise guy in OJ Mayo for Kevin Love, an above average role player. McHale apperently pulled the trigger on this trade, because he likes how Love meshes with Jefferson. I dont care how well they might mesh, you can never pass up on a talent like OJ Mayo, he's one of a kind. The only thing I like about this trade for Minny is that they recieve, in my opinion, along with Shane battier, the most underrated player in the game, Mike Miller. He was the Grizz's leader rebounder, and maybe best all around player. The only problem is, they stick Miller, Brewer and Foye in the same position, and one of these guys have to play out of their comfort zone. Just an all around dumb move for a franchise who is notorious for their idiotic moves. They did pick up Mario Chalmbers in the 2nd round which was the biggest steal of the draft... oh wait, then traded them to Miami, nice Mchale.
2. New York Knicks: New personnel, same result. I liked their pick, in the sense that Gallinari is a skill big man, but in D'Antoni's system, you need an amazing PG. And unless they are pulling off a miracle in the free agency, I dont see how you pass up on either Bayless or Gordon. They are those face paced guards that D'Antoni loves. Gallinari is someone who plays very similar ball to Bostjan Nachbar who was probably going to sign with the Knicks. The Knicks were also dangling Lee to move up to perhaps grab Mayo, but were unwilling to part with Nate Robinson, which is idiotic. These guys hanging on to peices rather than getting star guys is what ultimately leaves teams in trouble. I see the logic, that you add as many peices as you can, but what ever happened to building a team around your franchise guy? New York may regret this
3. Indiana Pacers: Larry Bird, top 5 player all time, not a good GM. First off you trade O'neal for Ford, which is not the best of deals. You could have used that cap space in one year, and have gotten a better deal. Then, BY SOME MIRACLE, Bayless drops in your laps, and you decide to trade him for Jarret Jack and Brandon Rush in addition to giving up Ike Diogu. Dont see the logic here. Maybe its because ive seen him play so much, but Bayless is better than Ford. Bayless is less risk and more reward, why put all your stock into an a shakey TJ Ford? I see where Bird is going with the up temp style, but how do you explain them picking up Roy Hibbert and not someone like Donte Greene, or McVee?
Other Losers:
Sacremento: Picked thompson why too high, and at least could have moved down and grabed another asset, unless they know something we dont (looking G State's way)
Seattle: I like Westbrook with Durant and Greene, but dont know how you pass up Brook Lopez or Bayless. Also drafting with their 24th pick a palyer (Ibaka) due to club issues with him home team, probably wont join the NBA for 2-3 years or so was not a smart move. You still had Darrell Arthur on the board, who would look nice as the starting 4.
How did your team do? Impressed or upset?
