Kobe is not yet on Micheal Jordan's level. He could be if he still continues to play.

Anyways..

WHEN IS ARTEST'S SINGLE COMING OUT "CHAMPION"?

But who was MJ's competition? There was no LBJ/DWade/Melo/Durant equivalent in his time, MJ was simply the best, period. You had Phoenix/Portland/NYK/DET back then, and now we have more teams that can contend.

are you serious?
championship #1, jordan beat magic johnson and the lakers, the ONLY other person in greatest ever debate
championship #2, jordan beat clyde drexler and the blazers, another hall of famer and a guy who could hold his own
championship #3, jordan beat charles barkley and the suns, amongst the greatest players to never get a ring
championship #4, jordan beat shawn kemp and gary payton and the supersonics, a guy who was on his way to being a hall of famer and a guy who is amongst the greatest point guards to ever play the game
championships #5 and #6, jordan beat karl malone and john stockton and the jazz, hall of famers and again, amongst the greatest to ever play their positions

to say that there was no competition during jordan's time is ludicrous, its just that jordan was head and shoulders above all of them. the only thing we could have wished for was to have hakeem's rockets face up against those great bulls teams. remember hakeem olajuwon? the greatest praise for him is that no one says the rockets messed up when they took hakeem over jordan in that draft.

and oh yeah, the lakers traded vlade divac to the hornets for kobe bryant. the lakers got lucky too.

But who was MJ's competition?
Over the course of his career, MJ came up against 16 top 50 NBA players:

Bird
McHale
Kareem
Magic
Worthy
Drexler
Ewing
Barkley
Stockton
Karl Malone
Moses Malone
Olajuwon
Robinson
O'Neal
Parish
Thomas

and the likes of Wilkins, Dumars, Price, Miller, Kevin Johnson, Payton, Mourning, Hardaway...

Sulman, I agree with your breakdown of the rings, but other than Magic (and maybe Clyde), I dont think there wasn't another solid shooting guard in the league. Clyde didn't shoot that well, he was a good finisher though. Barkley/KJ, Stock/Malone & Kemp/Glove were great tandems, but I'm talking on an individual level. I can make a similar comparison to Deron/Boozer, the big 3, Parker/Duncan, Roy/Oden (so much for that, haha), Billups/Melo, and im sure a few more. I think the league is stacked with better talent now than in Jordan's time, everyone is more athletic and stronger (although i would still put my money on Oakley in a street fight). When you look at the top guards in MJ's time, I think most of us would say it would come down to MJ or Magic. If you look at today, you can include Kobe, LBJ, Wade, Melo, Durant all in the discussion. I would still take Kobe in a heartbeat, but I think the competition is a little stiffer. Yes Jordan was amazing, but it helped that no one was that individually dominant other than Magic.

the jordan era vs the current era is impossible to directly compare, as is comparing any era to another. and not to be nit picky, but the only player you mentioned currently that is technically a shooting guard is kobe (lebron melo durant all play the 3, while wade is the point guard [i think?]). in all sports, the athletes of today are more athletic and stronger (ive made the argument so many times that if you put even a decent enough player from today back in any of the previous eras, and they would be "the greatest ever"). and as much as its in our nature to debate jordan vs kobe, shaq vs wilt, sheed vs laimbeer (for greatest nutcase), we can only compare players amongst their own generation and who they played against. the reason, for me at least, that jordan will be remembered as the greatest ever is how he transcended the game like no one else ever before, and like no one ever will (the closest to him was tiger woods).[/i]

on a random note jordan also missed 20 shots in his last championship game ( but had the pushoff and shot over russel for the win ).

comparing kobe and jordan is stupid. who cares. kobe is still playing and has time to add more rings, they are different and its not a disrespect that kobe is not as good as him.

the 80s belong to magic and bird, 90s to jordan, so far the 00's belong to kobe and maybe the next 4 or 5 years will too. lets appreciate how awesome everyone is. <3

who you calliin sillly man? The only silly thing is your damn synopsis.

Kobe demanded a trade, jordan left after his father died. Came back and won 3 more at the age of 32-36. Competition? Hello, look at all the greats jordan played with..barkely, hakeem, robinson, kemp, magic, larry, isiah, there was loads of competition.

But if you look at Kobe's success, he had Shaq, and now Gasol

You can say Paxson-Kerr=Fisher
Rodman=Artest=Ariza=Horry, all good in their own ways
Gasol=pippen, but gasol is a bigger presense,
Farmer=Randy Brown
Kukoc=Gasol
Devin George=Cliff Levingston

The teams were the same.....

Jordan had mistresses, so does Kobe and so does every nba player...Get the mistresses outta the question.

Jordan might have punched Kerr or been odd with Teamates but you could never see his distress as much as you can see Kobe's on Camera. Kobe=Phudu.

So amplify that Mr. Khan

Hold the phone slammer newspaper! so you go from saying that jordan's team was never built for a championship like lakers or boston today.......to saying that the teams are the same? hmmmmmmmmmm

Lights..camera...door slammed shut on the slammer.

PS - kobe's best years went to waste because of a shit supporting cast. You cant hold it against him for wanting a trade.

Also...MJ is still better than kobe that has been established and beaten to death. Get over it.

I don't quite get why not having comparable competition at his own position is a knock against Jordan, bhai. For one, there have been few elite NBA shooting guards throughout history. Further, the list shrinks when considering those who were indisputably the top dog on multiple championship winning teams. Even today, the 2 (and the 3) are possibly the easiest positions to fill. The fact remains that in an era in which success primarily hinged on a team's bigs and running post plays through them, Jordan turned a complementary position into a focal point on offense. And yes, Kobe's done that too but it isn't my intention to compare the two.

He also shot 43%, outscored his closest teammate by thirty, scored the last four points in a minute after his team were down by three, the last two of which came off his own steal, on the road at the age of 35.

As a Laker fan who watched literally every game since 95 I can tell you some facts about the Lakers. Phil Jackson is a huge reason Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, Pippen won anything. The triangle offense when run with the correct personnel is perfect. Huge reason for their success.

It is a fallacy to think Kobe was a side kick to Shaq the same way people don't give Pippen any credit when talking about the Bulls 6 rings. SCOTTIE PIPPEN IS A TOP 50 PLAYER OF ALL TIME. One of the greatest DEFENDERS EVAR.

Kobe sacrificed his game for the team and deferred until it was time to take over in clutch time. All because he wanted to win more than anything, if the Lakers had a dick like Iverson I don't wanna imagine what would have happened.

Players personal lives are irrelevant. We are not 5 anymore we are mature enough to have better role models.

Kobe and Jordan are different. I know they have lot in common but that is because of the evolution of the game. Kobe learned from Jordan who learned from Dr. J who learned from Elgin to learned from random white guys from the days of the NBL. Lets appreciate everyone's talents and the entertainment they bring us.

Those two series were the only times I ever rooted for MJ, mostly cuz I hated Malone so much. mwhahaha that steal brings back memories.

How did you feel in 03-04? :p
It was really odd. Imagine finding out that the bully that beat you up and stole your lunch money every morning was your cousin who was coming to live with you. I begrudgingly rooted for him and learned to appreciate him. Especially since his injury totally screwed up our season and we had to use Brian Cook in his place in the finals. Then he hit on Kobe's wife and was shunned. Then I could go back to hating his child molesting ass.
