I think previous focus groups had shown that the old layout left things untouched because of how the eye browses a webpage. for instance, you'll find the search has moved from top-right (unimportant, out of the way) to a more central focus. The notifications and friend requests also get a prominent placing top-left. It makes sense. That said,

PS - I remember when Facebook was ivy-only snobbery and had a plain-text wall of text. yes-- notepad, but on the interwebz.

It's not creeping when those people are on your friends list right? Unlike some people, I don't add everyone and their moms... I enjoy seeing pictures of peoples travels and adventures... Take it for what it's worth... Not everyone on facebook is a creep in someway or another... Nice gutter mentality...
