Wait...Did she really change her name? Maybe Nikki her is nickname for Nimrata (I guess I can see why that's useful when campaigning)...and then she married Michael Haley? idk...this is just based off of Wiki

she used to use Randhawa-Haley a couple of years ago as the last name. but she is smart and dropped the foreign sounding part. big ups to her even though she is a tea partier.

Born a Sikh Punjabi...Nimrata Randhawa...converted to Christianity, which is fine...

but change your name? really?

this kinda stuff ALWAYS disappoints me...shes running for SC governor...wiki below.

Her "conversion" doesn't bother me. She said she still attends Gurudwara on occasion and if someone converts or stops believing that is there business, I wouldn't disparage 'em for it. Also, I think the consensus has been that she is not especially religious but that she attends Church with her family. I also find the dissection of Haley's and Jindal's religious beliefs to be very intolerant and ignorant. We don't know why they converted or why they believe what they do. They shouldn't be questioned for their religious beliefs in such a way.

In regards to her name, Nikki is a pretty common nickname for Punjabis. Considering her name is Namrita I could easily see her being called Nikki from a young age. The Haley is obviously her huband's last name.

The REAL story we should be talking about is this: http://gawker.com/5555021/south-carolina-senator-calls-indian-gubernatorial-candidate-a-raghead

Harman your points are all valid..As I said her conversion is fine...belief is not to be judged. As far as her name..

I think she shoulda kept Randhawa-Haley...just because it would be nice to see a Sikh American proud of her heritage....not willing to change it for campaign purposes ..which was clearly the purpose of her name change.... given that she used to go by Randhawa-Haley...

Harman..you don't see any lack of integrity in not using the name she originally used (Randhawa-Haley) or Namrita for that matter? Should I have put Jerry Mangat instead of Harjeet Singh Mangat on my dental application in hopes that the admissions committee would somehow perceive me differently...you may think that its a different ball game for politics but it really isn't...

Her being called a raghead was clearly an ignorant statement made by an insignificant man..thats all I have to say about that.

Edit-- forgot to put "called" in my initial post..did not mean for it to read "her being a raghead". My apologies.

she actually pushes her christianess and talks about faith alot. probably because she is a tea partier and needs those votes.

about the lack of integrity. she is in politics, you have to have a lack of integrity if you wanna succeed.

i think jon stewart did a good job last night on the raghead stuff. pretty good stuff. as a raghead myself, sure feels good to know people know what's up. thanks racist south carolina guy, way to really bring that term back out for me. it's been too long since i've been called one.

clearly, my comments are sarcastic. i can care less about this woman, i don't care about her religious beliefs, or who she is. i just don't agree with her politics.

If you went by Jeeti instead of Harjeet that wouldn't be a compromise of your values (I think). If she is using the nickname her family gave her I can't really fault her. Now if she just made her name Suzy Haley or something I would understand that it is obviously compromising. The last name change, I agree that is a compromise if she used to go by Randhawa-Haley but got rid of the hyphen. I'm sure it helped, I think a lot of people were even surprised she was Indian, they just assumed she was white.

But really, she is running for election in South Carolina- a state with a very racist past and deeply embedded racial problem. I don't think Jake Knotts is irrelevant...he was on the South Carolina House of Reps from 1994-2002 and has been in the state Senate since 2002. The guy makes important decisions and influences policy and he is holding obviously prejudiced and bigoted views. The fact that he could say what he did and not be fearful of losing public support is telling...he isn't the only one who feels like that.

The commonality besides the conversion and Indian background is that both are running for/already are governor of states that are BELOW the MD line.
