I was watching Blowout, WBBC, and other videos, and I noticed that not many teams do simple phumania anymore. Is there any reason for this?

don't blame judges, comps set up creative rubrics that the judges have to follow up.

Also, doing simple things requires perfect execution and solid dancers. If you try something different then the frame of reference is removed and we can't compare your phumania directly with all the great dancers we've seen before. So you can get away with some of your dancers not executing as well...

There was a trend to be more creative with phumaniya a few years back, and now it's seen as less creative and more schticky because everyone did it. With some of the college teams, doing their own phumaniya is a bit of a throwback to old routines, kinda just keeping in line with the team's style. I don't see anything really wrong with it though, it's just a variation on a traditional move and the team is still dancing and can show proper folk execution of the step. Not nearly as modern as most of the gimmicks teams bring out these days.
