The French have been pretty important to the European Union, which strengthened the overall European economy and created the largest international trading market.
They were one of the first to actually question genetically modified foods, and create strict regulations for them. In the US & Canada, GM foods have been largely unregulated and unlabeled without concern. It might seem insignificant to you but I think regulating GM foods and companies is important in keeping with the precuationary principle that has always been at the forefront of science and health developments.
They were one of the only countries actually vocalizing their discontent with "the War on Terror" even if they've been a bit hypocritical about it.
and if someone actually researched it, I'm sure they could find a ton of things.
France actually is one of the nations that should be looked at in a positive light, just like countries such as Switzerland etc. They have a pretty sweet educational system too.
