Incredible singer. Pure God given talent. I love listening to Ustad Nusrat Fathe Ali Khan's (among other legends) qawwalis .. bring so much peace to your soul. The variation in his high-mid-low notes and his ability to have such control of his voice at any level is unparallel. In my humble opinion, one of the best singers from South Asia to ever live.

Thanks for posting Osman bhai!

P.S. - I also love the ghazal's of Attaullah Khan & Abida Parveen. I can't forget to mention that Musarrat Nazir is pure FOLK!

Great Video here is another one, nothing better than a qawaali about Sohni-Mahiwal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWcd-Bpqrlg

Facts about Nusrat:

Ancestors came from Afghanistan around 300 years ago and settled in Jalandhar where his family stayed until Partition from when they moved to Lyallpur (Faislabad), that is why his qawaali tradition is called Punjabi Doaba Style.

His Father wanted him to become a Doctor because qawaals were not respected but he realized Nusrat wanted to sing too and started training him

Hritik Roshan's grandfather Roshan (the music composer) was a friend of his father and used his compositions in the movie Barsaat Ki Raat. Most famous being Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai Ishq Ishq

Though his mothertongue was Punjabi he was able to sing in many languages including Farsi, Arabic, Brij Basha (old hindi), Purbi, and Urdu albeit with a hint of Punjabi accent ;)

Unlike most Punjabi qawwals Nusrat was a great student of Hindustani classical music, learning Khyal, dhrupad and other forms as well as folk singing.

Sang at Slough Gurudwara in the UK in 1989. The video is all over youtube and google video. He had two albums of qawaalis dedicated to Guru Ravidas, a CD of Shabads and sang a few bhajans as well.

Had one daughter but no sons so he adopted Rahat as his main disciple and janasheen. He also taught his other nephews Rizwan and Muazzam and also Faiz Ali Faiz qawwal.

Like all Punjabis he liked to eat, alot.
