Edit: Didn't realize half my review didnt post. Here we go once again:
Okay, so ive been relatively inconsistent on this thread. not gonna do full team reviews, just highlights. if a team wants a particular review, shoot me a PM.
What an amazing weekend. First time being at a competition and not competing since i started dancing. Same old boston for the most part, same venue, same overpriced drinks (2 IPA's for 24 bucks was easily my dumbest expenditure for the year), same nice stage but shitty seating, same drunken fools int he audience.
BU - stark differences in dancer abilities. Abhi and Cherag Killed it. khunde swing under the legs was NJ esque but looked good in coed and towards the front/in windows. Paggan were a major issue. honestly this early in the show its all i recall.
NYPD - show REALLY started. good set, very very gimmicky, very toronto. not that clean, and dancers are all good but just fluctuated way too much in consistency, going from all out to very lazy. personally did NOT like the numb/encore jhoomar. Khunde segment was my favorite i believe. This set really just exemplified the modern style that is very rapidly infesting the once folk-heavy toronto bhangra scene. At times its good, but at times its overkill, and no, NYPD is not the only team guilty of this. but just my two cents. quick shout to Harman, not sure if you remember meeting me at the hotel post performance, but good to meet you. Only one i was formally introduced to on your whole team.
UVA - good performance, VCU esque. Gimmick was okay, SRK was pretty good. Second pagh problem of the night and it was extremely distracting. Also this performance fell flat for me because alot of people were just getting to their seats. This happened, legit, until the very end, but was pretty bad at this time.
NU - my fav coed performance of the night. Very clean, very good dancers. First jorhi killed it (barua and armaan). high energy, and just a fun fun performance. Definitely stood a chance at placing, but i think it just didnt hit quite as hard as some other performances and thats what held it back. Also, its boston, unless youre building a truck on stage, your not winning (but more on that later). Oh, armaan, i think we have a vid of you guys, and unless you plan on using it agian, i think you should most definitely allow everyone to see what was a great perf. it was.
Cornell - All i can say is JUGNI FORMATION! So ill, its my best memory of a particular formation of the whole night. I won't spoil it. Good performance, some strong dancers on this team. Also a contender for placing in my head. Really this performance and NU's have forced me to rethink counting out most collegiate teams at competitions due to turnover. They really came focused to this comp. ***EDIT: It was you guys that had the Inception theme if i remember. i LOVED LOVED LOVED the spinning girl as a reference to the top, but it missed very badly with alot of people. All of my friends didnt understand it until i exlpained it, at whcih point they were like OHHHH i get it now, so i'm not sure how the judges felt.
KPGD - LOVED these fellas. Kanwar, Sumeet, Justin, shout out to you guys. Bunch of really cool kids. This team has potential, and alot of good dancers. It was a very very very good 8 man set with GOOD gimmicks! 90% the same from idols if i recall correctly, but the improvements made it better! Keep it up! Practice a bit more (i know it was difficult post idols) and work on consistency, and theres not much else i would change. With more work, dancers who are already talented will become very very good. It was a FOLK, ENTERTAINING set, and exactly what i like in a bhangra team. Not much else to say here.
RU - Good set. Good group of dancers. Same at the burgh performance, with better execution. DeadMau5 gimmick was hit and miss. Some people loved it, others just looked confused. To be honest i dont remember alot of aspects beyond remembering it was alot like burgh, and that i liked it, please forgive my lack of memory. If a video goes up, ill watch it once as a refresher and update here. Special shout out to sanjana at purple jorhi, who i knew before she was the apparent bhangra phenom she now is. Oh and also, the btf and vent shout out int he beginning, though making fun, made me laugh for a good minute.
Jawani - First of all, a bunch of classy, and cool girls. A little doe-eyed since a few of them are fairly new dancers, and it was great seeing people just genuinely excited to be performing. It is something that some of our elite teams are missing, but i digress. Similar set to idols, same music for the most part. The jazz and fun were there, with a few mishaps (the sign being backwards, and there was one stunt that didnt go up), but my interest was kept. To be frank, there were many new dancers, and it clearly showed. Yet improvement was there already from Idols, and it was equally as clear that there is major potential. Under the guidance of seasoned veterans Jane and Bharathi, this crew is bound to go places.
Empire - Wow. Wow. Wow. If you thought empire was "entertaining" with their style before, think again. They put past performances to shame with a flawless rendition of their true empire style with the addition of more folk aspects. They seemlessly transitioned from the Empire we know (and the empire some love/hate) into a team executing chaffa, fasla, sial koti, SOME jhoomar (incorporate more here), and more, and right back to modern. Great flow to the set. That having been said, it was heavy gimmick wise. The truck building was cool, but honestly the most out there gimmick ive seen on a bhangra stage. KJ built a truck with people. Empire built a truck with people... and then added panels to make a realistic truck. Entertaining? absolutely. Bhangra? absolutely not. Still, sitting in the audience simply wishing to be entertained, i stood and cheered for this team as hard as i could. Oh, one negative, the pop and locking. Like, one quick flow would have been okay but i really felt like i was watching a fusion performance at that point. Even for empire, that was a bit eh for me.
SMD - Do these ladies ever disappoint? i dont think so. Best SMD set in terms of a balance of gimmicks and dance, in my opinion. Lit up letters at the beginning were perfect. Everything was clean, and the girls performed well. As some of the girls have improved as dancers, however, i feel a few got left a bit behind here, which is unfortunate. It became more obvious who the less energetic/capable dancers were relative to the great ones as it seems that the stronger dancers got stronger and the average/good dancers remained the same. There were a couple of very tiny move mistkaes, but nothing off in terms of formations. My biggest issue with this set was its pace. It was a constant 85% energy set, marked by a couple of moments of hard hitting slow downs (jugni got the crowd going hard core), but never did i see the energy INCREASE. As with anything, a constant pace hinders differentiation and becomes a bit monotonous. And i think this is what kept the ladies from placing. Their style of bhangra is perfect for boston, as is their creativity, but this set simply did not change it up enough to keep the crowd on their toes often enough.
AEG - I've written about them 3 times so far. Best dancing set, but i will say this (especially after having seen the video). Establish more of a consistent style. Everyone has swag, and attitude (ankush your nakhreh is dope. my favorite on your team), and EVERYONE can dance, but there was just a bit more variation between styles of dancers than you'd like to see, and it becomes more apparent with an overall fast paced set. If my opinion matters, emulate the lime green jorhi. Two tremendous dancers who dont even need to be named. They exhibited, in my opinion, the best balance of grace and energy, where as the larger percent had greater energy than grace. Now gimmicks wise, you guys pulled out all the stops. Some hit well (balloon pop was the sickest of the set), and some were, in my opinion, a fail (googley eyes). I understand it was boston, and gimmicks are tried and true, but i feel that even without some you guys could have still placed and remained your old balance of Dance > Gimmicks. Nonetheless, after what i can say was the most abysmal AEG performance at BAB, you guys have returned to true form. "Allow me to reintroduce myself" at the beginning of the mix was very appropriate. Joe Campy, i missed your presence on stage and in my arms at the after party
MIT - Honestly, i think this may have been the weakest performance of the night. Alot of people were getting up at this point so i missed alot visually, but i remember being a bit confused with alot of transitions, etc. I remember liking the slow down for the ending, and the guy who threw the shikke outwards on the cue was sick, but honestly i think it wasn't very cohesive. If a video goes up here as well i'll watch once for a refresher and add.
Afterparty - jam packed. good music. decently priced drinks. Why in cambridge though? seriously, not a positive.
After After Party - Sure it was at a food court, but i wont lie i had a blast. lots of room to dance, good music. It was really only for the teams

but since others got in i guess feelings were mixed. If you came to show off bhangra skills, it was perfect. lol
I think thats everything. After initially being a bit I have alot of opinions about other things, but i would like to say that despite the POTENTIAL for alot of fights to occur, everyone was pretty classy. There are rumblings of different things out there about characters on certain teams, and i experienced a few first hand, but its nothing that ignoring couldnt take care of. To those few people looking to ruin things/ start drama. dont even try to be classy, just grow up. To those level headed people who took the high road on alot of potential altercations, hats off to you.
