OPINION: 8 man music sets.

What do you think of them? Since when did 12/16/18 become the definitive numbers for music sets. If a team can fill a stage well with 8 I think its fine. Thoughts?

when was the last time an 8 man music set won a competition or even placed second or third?

They are boring and will never be able to compete due to a lack of formations and stage usage.

Yes, it is fine if a team with 8 people can fill the stage well. Yet if another team of 12 can fit the stage just as well and are just as clean, then they are at advantage as having 12-man clean performance is more entertaining, more versatile and more difficult to achieve.

In the end, it's all relative. It doesn't matter if you have 12 soldiers in your army or 70. When two armies meet, it's not the number of soldiers that determine the victor, rather how well they fought, how well they fought as a team, how well they used their battleground and how well they were planned against their opponents.

let me clarify: when was the last time an 8 man set won a top tier competition?

When was the last time you saw an 8 man team at a top tier competition? If a team gets into Elite 8, do they really want to go 8 man when they'll be at a clear disadvantage to 12/16 man teams? Teams will obviously try harder for the top tier comps, so they won't go 8 man when it's a perceived disadvantage.

It's a shame, 8 man teams may offer less in terms of formations, but there's a better chance to focus on the overall talent. In my opinion, execution trumps formations and gimmicks, I would rather watch a team of 8 sick dancers with sick choreo than see a 12/16 man team with mediocre execution but cooler formations/gimmicks. But that's just me.

I think you answered your own question.

Honestly, 8 man teams just do not fill the stage enough and carry enough presence-- even with talented dancers. The reason Pao was mentioned is that the constructed stage is much smaller than what you'd see at Burgh, Bruin, etc.

Also, IMHO, the striking difference is much clearer in person. I've said it before and will say it again -- video is a medium that brings everyone to the center. Amazing performances look solid; lackluster energy and poor performance looks acceptable.

true. you have to be very talented to pull off a good 8 man set. havn't seen an 8 man set where all 8 dancers were good in a while...pcbca?

doesn't matter how many people are on stage, doesn't matter what competition it is, doesn't matter what "bhangra experts" think, as long as dancers are doing bhangra justice, enjoying themselves on stage, and the audience enjoys the performance it's worth it. kinda sick of how everyone feels like they have to define what the best way to do bhangra is.

Actually we won as Cobra Bhangra not too long ago @ Notorious bhangra 2012
in my opinion (maybe im biased because im a live dancer) sometimes its cleaner and alot simpler when a team goes 8 and murders their set and most of the time when teams go 12/16 etc they have some weaker dancer which they try to hide in the back, but with 8 guys everyone is seen and u cant really hide a weak dancer. but i agree a 12/16 man set is alot better to fill a stage and for formations.

Sometimes the situation is such that there aren't enough people for a certain comp; so the choice arises to either go to comp with 8 people rather than 12 or 16. Nishani at MCB decided to go as 8 man because we didn't have enough people to go co-ed but we still managed to fill up the stage throughout the performance. an example of an 8 man set that actually did good was AEG at Bhangra Masti 2009 which placed 3rd, and still manged to fill up the stage. Cobra Bhangra at Notorious 2012 as well, a fan favorite for many.

unless its a live set where 8 is the way its "meant" to be, 8 man music just looks empty. Competiting with teams who have so much complexity in their formations and also gimmicks/stunts is hard to match with only 8 dancers, even 10man is a bit tough these days.
Either way going 8 man should not stop a team from competitng, as long as your bring a solid performance usually youre fine :)

I have no idea if its been said but 8 set team doesn't look bad just the dancers need to be all talented or it looks bad with a weaker dancer

I absolutely agree with you!
