Hey everyone,
I would like to start off by saying that if you haven't already viewed our muliple video logs of the weekend, please do, because this review is probably not going to give you as much of an accurate view into the weekend as the crazy things that we did there(please check the go pro video if you have not already!!).
Firstly, I would like to start of by thanking everyone on Cornell Bhangra who were so accomodating to us this entire weekend. You guys did a great job in terms of taking us places, helping with our music, arranging rides when we needed to get them, and to also just hang out with us and make sure we were having a good time. Although we have a Junior team and they tend to travel extensively, you guys really made sure the environment was fun and really cool for the diverse group we brought on stage. Special shoutouts to Lina for her great work in creating a unique and dynamic registration packet and using a lot of things teams use nowadays(google docs/groupme) to keep us informed about everything going on. Anik and Kartik, you guys were great hosts and really helped us out when it came to a lot of little things. Thanks for arranging rides so some of us could ball, as well as help with lighting cues and walking us through the little things during the day. Kartik - sick job as an mc.
Our timeline:
So we left around 1:30 and drove into pretty torrid rain and a progressively bleak and rainy bogish landscape that surrounds the cornell. When we we arrived, the mixer was just due to start but a lot of teams were stuck in traffic. Thankfully, our liaisons Mohit and Monica were patiently waiting for us at the hotel, and even booked us a shuttle to the venue for the mixer! The hotel was really accomadating, but I think one thing to work on for next year is to get more hotel rooms in one place and let us know ahead of time about when to book. We were told Wednesday at 3pm to book hotels by Friday evening, and thats just not enough time(andcoincidently, since their was a students day, one member of the team had to book a hotel elsewhere).
Mixer:
Mixer was a fun and loose atmosphere. Although we were one of the first to arrive, Cornell did a great job of talking to us and going out of our way to make sure we felt comfortable. The venue was small, but it really fit the crowd there(only four teams and volunteers). Although we like to be treated well, Indian food really isn't necessary/helpful for teams - I think we would have preferred something more carb heavy and less....saucy. Having the lassi people sponsor you was cool, but when lassi is also the predominant beverage at the mixer, it can make a lot of people thirsty haha. Mixer was pretty heavily delayed, but that was mostly due to teams showing up intermittently throughout the night(no idea how to fix this), but the games were really fun! I think everyone had a great time with the olympic theme and the games, and the flags you guys made were awesome(btw I am on team blue, and we need our prizes!!).
Post-Mixer:
Thanks again to monica and mohit for taking us to barton(and monica for shuttling us through the rain!). Getting space at Barton was great and a really cool experience to get access to the venue before the competition. We had adequate practice space and we got water from the board as well, which was a huge plus. Props to anik to getting us rides back to the hotel after we shot hoops with some of the cornell guys!
Tech-Time:
Tech time was supposed to start around 1, but was delayed around half an hour to due to set-up. However, we were kindly told this beforehand and were assured there were more no delays(there were not). Our liaisons made sure we were kept abreast of any further developments as well as members of Paos eboard. Our tech time had some music issues, but Taisu and sound fixed it for us immediately(the speaker system was amazing). Also, it was great have Mohit and Binghamtons own Kevin Acker assist in the performance with Macklemore and the Banner. Another cool thing that Pao does was allowing us to watch tech times, which was sweet! Also, the Olympic entrance was really cool and prep for that us was a lot of fun too(constant running, corny bhangra, flag waving). Special thanks to Cherag from Fauj for helping us with our paggan(and tying mine while making sure the go pro got on on the pagg ok). I think the only downside of tech time was the food was naan, chole, and mattar paneer, which although awesome, made us all want to shittake in about 30 minutes. However the fact that our liaisons got us 95 soft tacos and burritos 15 minutes after we requested it was a huge huge huge huge plus. Win.
Show:
The show was great! Kartik and co did a great job mcing(sorry didnt catch names!!). The audience was packed and the show ran very smoothly. Watching a lot of the cornell teams perform was fun, and each team was pretty awesome. With tufts and yale, I think we were all really surprised at how solid y'all were and what your brought to the stage. Tufts that streamer thing was nuts!! Also, yale, you guys have improved by leaps and bounds from MCB as well! Shoutout to Aeg, also, for a fruitful late night, and for somehow finnangling sahil into the performance. Olympic run at the beginning was really well received, and the incorporation of Olympic themes throughout the performances really brought everything together. Everything seemed to run on point, and thanks to pao for letting us bring out a lot of interesting stuff as well as hyping up the go-pro action!
Afterparty:
Venue was awesome and a great idea. The five for five plan was also sweet! It was great to have an afterparty for teams and to hang out with everyone. Shoutouts to the Binghamtom Bhangra crew and the Deleware/JSA crew for hanging out and kicking it with us. Nice try on the after-after party kartik - maybe it wont end so fast next time haha.
Overall, the weekend was a great experience for the entire team. For kids, parents, and the senior members, it was a wonderful place to have fun and perform with no stress and no drama. The whole weekend revolved around meeting people and Pao really made the exhibition something for the teams. Not a single member of the team had a bad word to say, and the kids thought if all competitions are like that everything is going to be sick(haha yeah...). Way to set high expectations for everyone Pao.
Individual Shoutouts:
To monica and mohit - you guys did an amazing job taking care of us. I remember speaking to mohit in the car and mentioning previous bad experiences with liaisons, and you were like "No way thats happening here". You guys memorized all of our names and went so far as to get a tubload of Taco Bell for us! Also, I remember the parents telling me how you guys would call and make sure that all the kids were at specific spots for all of the days events(didn't need to do it, but showed you guys really cared). We have nothing bad to say at all about you guys - truly a wonderful job.
Kuldeep/LadyKiller/Taisu/Lina - great job with taking care of us. Thanks for letting us ball with you guys, take us randomly to Taco Bell and to places, and to deal with all of our small problems. Loads of fun.
Kevin Acker- Macklemore(you know you killed it). Thanks again bro.
Cherag- Sick pag bro, and thanks for all the tips/feedback/advice. Couldn't have gone pro without you
