Battle of the Sexes: NYU Pandemonium

Overall & BOB Bid Winner: UC Berkeley

Congrats to all the teams who performed and placed. Phillyfest was sick from start to finish and all the teams raised the bar with their performances this year. I wanted to share my excitement with all of you because this was truly momentous for NYU Pandemonium for a couple of reasons.

1. NYU Pandemonium has been around for 4 years, and has rarely placed 1st place at anything. We always attributed this to the fact that we would design our performances to please the crowds, rather than the judges. This weekend we saw that the two can converge and that teams can create exciting crowd pleasing performances while still elevating their technical skills.

2. We don't use glitter, we don't use makeup, we don't have fancy backdrops, we don't spend huge wads of cash on our performances...proving that while all that is nice, it is not essential to winning. Focus on the performance, the dance, the concept, and the practices and then add on all that jazz.

3. This is big for bhangra. When we first started, NYU Pandemonium could not catch a break from any critics. Bhangra teams did not like the fact that we were mixing somewhat traditional bhangra with hip hop or that we didn't wear full vaardiyaan. Fusion teams did not like us because we only did bhangra and hip hop, often being quoted as not Fusion enough. This year, we started to do more research and become active in the bhangra and hip hop community to learn and elevate the dance in our performances. We want people in the fusion realm (last night about 1700 people) to see cool traditional moves like phumaniyaan etc, even if its in a modified form.

4. Its always nice to be #1 lol.

Congrats Abhi! That's definitely quite an achievement. From what I heard from friends at the competition, Penn Dhamaka was very close (someone mentioned that they lost to you guys by 1/7th of a point - I'm not sure how accurate that is).

My friends did think Penn Dhamaka had the edge over you guys and were robbed. But a 1st place is a 1st place! I can't wait to see the videos and judge for myself.

And I heard your music was dope! And some bollywood in there too - I guess you guys cant call yourself just bhangra and hiphop anymore! I guess the critics can't hit you for not being fusion enough anymore!
