Competitions announce placings at the After Party.



Out of this world. I know. I had this idea back in 2009 and it was crazy then so its probably still crazy now. Would love to hear thoughts on it and hopefully it can branch into something clever. Hear me out:


Pros:
-Gives teams a chance to wind down and have a plain old good time, post selfies, crack jokes together.
-NO ONE WILL BE LATE TO AFTER PARTY if they know placings are going to be announced. I guarantee that.
-Judges will have more time to deliberate (or in WBBC15's case, watch instant replay footage) to make the best possible decision. Teams spend months prepping, judges spending an hour as opposed to 15 mins deciding the outcome can't hurt.
-If my team was announced 1st at the party...best believe that bar would be bought out. Competitions would hit their bar minimum with ease meaning more $$$


Cons:
-I had this idea before 18U teams like DCMPAA were around and kids weren't packing a serious competitive punch. So wouldn't work well if they're in the lineup
-You would probably have to keep the judges away from everyone or take away their phones. No one can keep their mouth shut nowadays
-After placings are announced, 9/10 captains would look like this...

...because Bhangra is life and having a good time with your crew or possibly even meeting a pretty girl that actually wants to talk to you aren't as important as crying in the club lobby over 3rd place.

I love the idea, Danny! Only thing that strikes me as the biggest con is so many family members and friends come out to support teams. From a paying audience member's perspective, it may (possibly may not - considering how much they actually care) suck having paid to watch a competition and not hear the results at the end.


The people who probably care the most is those who travel to watch the competition though, parents will probably say the same shit like "good job puth" regardless of first or last place

This is an interesting idea! I think it's great for judges and teams but bad for the audience. As smetha said, they traveled (or at least bought tix and came) for the competition. Not everyone wants to buy tickets to your afterparty.

what would you do about post comp judges meetings?

I also feel as if teams/captains may not be able to get into afterparty mode if they don't know what the placings are. I like for the comp to end, have our judges meeting, and then move onto the non-comp fun part if that makes sense. It gives it some separation.

Does mean though, like pointed above - that the people that find out the results are at the afterparty. All the audience members that don't go to the afterparty won't find out, and thats a lot of people!

that also means that you can't take a photo in your vardiyaan with the trophy! We usually don't change clothes until after the placings so that be impossible...unless we rock the club/bar with vardiyaans lol

I'm going to just say no because I've been to after parties where alcohol and anger have gone poorly and a lot of people have suffered for it. If those instances are aftershocks from an the embers of a spent volcano, I really don't want to see the eruption.

Overall, I think I understand the premise of why this is happening - comps are becoming a more focused on the fifteen minutes of the trophy announcement then everything that came before it. I think this especially prevelent since the circuit is skewed so much in favor of independent teams, who are comprised of individuals who are sacrificing time away from work/school to win(and who know a lot of the people in the circuit/on their team). College teams are just as competitive, but at the end of the day it's a four year cycle that had an enhanced meaning due to its having an established finale.

The circuit is still fun, but its a lot more competitive and repetive due to a few factors (overexposure of bhangra comes to mind) has made the competitive landscape more barren (where are your up and coming all guys and college teams? Wheres the surprise team of the night? Where are those random comps with random lineups).

I guess I went away from the post, but although I don't agree with the idea, I think if you want people at the after party, why not push judges deliberation to the morning after a comp? Maybe pre-select questions for the judges to answer and record them talking about those questions or write down some notes while fresh in their mind, then discuss it in the morning. Its insanely to organize logistics for a team after a show when you have to set up judges meetings for the team and then decide to take away their captains. Also shuttles for vardis and props?
