I'm probably gonna ramble a bit but whatever. This is the first time I've seen an Indian team practice and I thought it was pretty cool to see it all as far the beginning and end result. I never knew they only practiced with a Dhol as far as music goes and not a singer/algozey/etc. to go along with that. Is that usually the case with most Indian teams. But yeah, it does seem like a lot of the time the singer is just randomly chosen to sing at the competition and thats it.

I never really noticed how graceful Indian teams were either. I mean damn you couldn't really see it as much during the performance video but all of their movements seemed precise as hell even though they weren't really trying. The guy on the very right in the beginning with the white shirt and jeans was SICKK.

But just in general though, how much do you guys practice to prepare for a competition? As far as our team goes we only have like one four hour practice a week because we're a high school team but I'm assuming it's somewhat easier for college teams and maybe Independent teams to schedule right? Like what do you guys do to make sure to get ready. Also, one thing I've always wondered especially for teams with crazy mixes, how do you guys plan out the routine? Is it mix first, then moves, then formations or do you guys go with some different to handle it?

PS The title comes from Allen Iverson's press conference if you didn't get the reference lol..

Yeah I knew most live teams practice dhol only, then later bring rest of band and singer or maybe a practice singer, then at end singer comes. I was like "whaaat forreall" at first but it seem to make sense and practical and thas really all u need to prac. Anyways damn I love seeing practice videos.

Pracs I think really just depend on your type of team

But like he was asking, anyone know about Indian teams??? how much/often? im curious

hey,

for planning out routines, we first pick out songs that sound tight and that everyone enjoys keeping in mind we need songs for props (saap and khunda), jhoomer, dhamaal, jugni, and in general sick songs for the rest. for us we kinda choreo first to get an idea, think of formations, change choreo if you think of something sick, but can't fit it in the formation, and keep tweaking. all the additions that you hear on mixes like hoy's and bruahs are kinda added after choreo. and then all the extra stuff on mixes is just at the discretion of the guy that does the mixing and his ideas on what can boost the tracks you choose. hope this helps.

Yeh we follow the same vein as kanvar in respect to delegating areas of our dance for use of sups/katos/dhaangs, jhoomer, dhamaal, jugni, etc and doing choreo and mixing then teaching the team. If better ideas come up we incorporate that into the dance/mix and change up formations and other things to make it "more ill". Since the team isn't very experienced we try to practice a lot(3-4 times, couple hours a week), so practice isn't the problem. My biggest advice is to teach your team to do it PROPERLY the first (your team could be doing stuff wrong etc.)

"Practice does not make perfect but rather perfect practice."

haha that's the best way to do it Tucker. But yeah I was just curious because it's taken us a long time to learn our routine and I've just been surprised that teams can have new routines in a matter of 2-3 months and the fact that people have practices like at midnight and at like 8 in the morning.

I'm curious about what Indian teams do to perfect their routines though too. I remember someone saying something most Indian teams bringing 2 or 3 sets to a competition in case some other team uses a similar routine and that there are 20 some alternates for when one of the regulars makes like one mistake. That's so intense I never realized just how into it Indian teams were.

how long do most teams take to make new routines? we have practice once a week for like 3-4 hours and finish a routine in a couple months.

i kno teams that have made a routine within one week! In one incident it was a matter of having a co-ed and all guys team, alotting less time to the guys for practice and having less time to make a set. Apparently Gabroo shokeen made their DDA 2004 routine in one day loll. Dunno if thats true, but from the video, they were pretty sloppy, so maybe haha.

I'm sure teams can make a routine and learn it hella fast, the practices after it "done" just make the difference in cleanliness, conditioning, etc

Makign the routine is the easy part i think, I know we've put together one in a day or two before. But then stuff changes, certain moves and formations get changed, so its usually finalized within a month or so. The hardest part is cleeaning everyone and. making sure stamina is up.

We practise 3-4 days a week 2 hours a a time.

we practice once a week for two hours. Setting initial routine usually takes about a week or two and rest of time is spend cleaning up the routine as well as changing it around as needed. It depends usually how many people are at practice. Sometimes it will just be a hand ful of us who do most of the choreo and song selection, but the more people we have at practice, usually the more is accomplished.

as competiton/performance dates get closer, we may double up practice times in the week or have longer practices, depends what works with everyone.
