Pugh Tying for Other Teams

I have noticed that several teams ritually get their pughs tied by other teams. Some have been doing this for years. I think it is an issue that needs to be addressed. Especially when a team of 14 lines up outside a dressing room acting like they are entitled to their pughs being tied by the team that actually knows how to. I have personally sent like 3 of my pugh tiers to tie other competitions like everytime. I think it's time that the "we don't have a pugh guy" excuse ends. Get a pugh tier, and stop expecting other teams to do it for you. If this is a lack of sportsmanship, think about this. Pughs are part of the performance, by getting someone else to tie 12-16 beautiful pughs for you, you automatically get an edge. It is fine to help other teams with lending props, or tying chaadaars, or anything. But when a team uses another team's pugh tier for like 2 hours, this is not ok, and simply, needs to end. This is the opinion of Faizan, not anyone else.

i only have a problem tying paghs for other teams when im competing just because i gotta worry about my teams and then another teams and its a hassel cuz if u rush da other teams and a pagh falls of, they may think you did that on purpose which is why i dont like tying other teams paggan at competitions, but if im not competing i dont got a problem and if the competitions in toronto i will most likely be tying paghs backstage :)

hey faizan i really like the point you have made, i often end up tying paggs for other teams and it gets really really annoying. people that end up tying that are from other teams have enough stress on their mind with their own team, people who come to watch end up missing parts of the show to tie paggs. i think members of a team should take time out to learn how to tie it correctly, if not from video's than ask someone that knows how too

Faizan - I think you're post will finally be a little more of a wake up call to teams to get their own pagg tier. Let me also state that I have asked teams numerous times to help with paggs, and I know that heading into my senior year where I am expecting suchhh a big year in bhangra - I can no longer use this excuse at all anymore. I have my MCATs on may 22, and after that I am absolutely free and on the top of my agenda is not just learning how to tieing a pagg, but mastering it. I want to be more than 100% confident in my pagg tieing abilities and I want to be extremely reliable to my team. My joridar Sumeet hasn't tied paggs before but after seeing him practice a few times he can really really get it down pat if he works on it - so for our team gettting 2 pagg tiers would literally mean thats the biggest load off of our shoulders in the world. Let's say if him and I both have mastered pagg tieing, then all we have to do is tie 3 paggs each and we're done...which means more time to relax before a performance/competition, and also a million times less stress. This would also give us the chance to help tie paggs on a few other people if asked before hand.

Summer is coming up, the season is almosttt over in a way, and I think everyone who is a leader on their team (guys/girls) should not just learn, but MASTER this art of uniforms in bhangra - every single part of it. Ladies should most definitely be masterful at pinning chunnis, etc...and guys with phuman/chadhrey/PAGGS, etc...

Faizan how many pagg tiers does aeg have? I thought only harman knew how to? Or did he train some of the team members - if you guys hvae like 3/4 pagg tiers mannn that is sickk as hell - major props to you guys..

We have had anywhere from 4-6 pugh tiers. 1 master, harman singh. Other than that we have had/have

Gurpreet Singh
Dilbagh Singh
Onkar Singh
Gurbir Singh
Harman Singh
hell, even i can tie a pugh if i have to.

it's all about learning, watch a video, it's not that hard. It just takes practice and patience. Before you know it, you'll be obsessed with making the perfect turla. It's time to do it on your on.

This post really makes sense.
But their can be one issue in which i think it is okay to get your pugh tied from another team. What if you are the pugh tier, and also on the team. And personally, i don't think that no one can tie a bhangra pugh on their selves (thats crazy if someone can).
So I think it can make sense if that person goes to another team and asks to get his pugh tied.

This is not the issue (although arguably having at least 2 people who can tie solves this problem)

What faizan is talkign about is the teams who don't even make an effort to learn but go to comps all the time and just expect someone to tie it for them. At the end of the day someone always will because it is part of the culture and no one wants to be the competitive asshole who says no.....but it is still a competition and even if they're happy to tie it's takign away from their focus on their team and that's unfair.

Tying one or two between teams so that people tying can get it on themselves is fine

I see what everyone is saying and I've def. been in the position of tying for other teams too (I've also had to say "no" to some teams too :( ).

I think one of the main problems is that though there are a few good videos out there, most of them require some sort of background in pagh tying (making pooni properly, the particular thumb folds when tying each larh, the whole process of making proper maava, etc.). I think if one person made a nice, multi-step, easy to follow/see video in ENGLISH starting with making the maava and finishing with tucking in the turla, you'd have more people who'd be willing to learn themselves. This video would have to be very slow, instructional, and zoom in on particular problem areas when tying a pagh...and it would be nice if it would address certain problem solving issues when tying (for example, what to do if the turla is over-starched?). Granted, actual practice does make perfect, but having this sort of video as a resource would make people feel more confident in their abilities of tying. The problem is who out of the community (who can tie paghs well enough) is willing to put in the time to do this? I would if I tied paghs as well as other teams :(

Any takers? hahaha

Edit: The video should also include REASONS for each step. Why am I making this larh thicker and tighter than the others? Why am I leaving this much material leftover? So on and so forth...That way people are actually learning and not just regurgitating steps. Hmmmm...I'd imagine having this sort of video would also increase the respect for paghs during performance and have people realize it's not just a "hat" that you dance with. Once people know how to tie paghs well, you can almost guarantee that pagh incidents will happen less on stage...or so one can hope?

ahahah (A) ;)
is it really that hard to tie it on yourself? i don't know...i guess i'm somewhat alone on that, i got a ton better at tying on myself, and slowly got better on other people.

That is true that you shouldn't go into a competition thinking someone will tie your pagg no matter what. That's just not right. Sure, this past weekend, i went and ceded that authority to Vic at bayside. Mainly, if you had been in our situation and knew of the stress and everything going on, my mind was not in a pagg tying mood by that point. I also told Vic many times that if he can't do it, or doesn't feel like it..no biggie, I'd handle the rest. I think you just gotta practice a lot. and i mean....A LOT!

if someone who is a "master" at tieing paggan could do this for the bhangra community - that would be soooooo helpful i cant even explain how much! I know some ppl will say - "yo there's vids out there go learn"..but if theres a little slower and zoom in type of instructional vid that wud be pretty sickkk

just my opinion though?...
