Hello
My name is Sonali. I am a student, Bhangra enthusiast, and volunteer for Sankara Eye Foundation (SEF) a non-profit organization whose mission is to eradicate curable blindness in India (VISION 20/20 by 2020).
Today, in India, there are 45 million people who are visually handicapped of which 12 million are completely blind! It's a sad but true fact. On a positive note, however, 80% of them can be easily cured by using existing and newly developed medical techniques. Since most of these people live in poor, rural areas of India, getting proper eye care is not an option. SEF is helping to bring quality eye care to the doorsteps of rural India FREE of charge, with 8 state-of-the-art hospitals in full operation and two more in the planing stages.
A few years ago, I volunteered at the Coimbatore hospital and was amazed by their work and the number of lives affected. Elders who were no longer dependent on their families to support them, men and women who could finally contribute to their family's financial needs, and children who could see well enough to go to school - your donation could help all these people plus more! It takes only $30 to perform one cataract surgery and give someone the gift of vision. Imagine, just $30 can change someone's life forever!
The newest project is a hospital in Punjab. Land has been acquired near Ludhiana but construction cannot begin as scheduled in July unless funds are raised to make it happen. Please visit the website below to donate to the cause.
