hi guys. im making a remix and i added dhols. i just wanted advice on people who know a lot about dhols. is the dhol a tuned instrument? like can it be a pitched instrument in keys? eg: dhol's that play a chord/note etc?
i dont want the dhols to interfere with what key my song is going to be in. its currently in D.
let me know guys thxxx

Dhol should be tuned before recording, it should match the same key before recording. You can do "fine tuning" in a graphic equalizer and compress after the recording is done. 95% of dhol/dholaks/tabla recordings are done as a L/R recording. Which basically means there are two takes. This is different from punch recording. Changing the key after the recording is done may make the tone sound a bit funny. Hope this helped.

thx buddy that helped a lot. i have a loop tho that i found here on btf and added it to my mix and i didnt record it live. i have no idea what key it is in but it fits perfectly. would it matter if the dhol was in a different key to the rest of the track?

I don't really think it make that much of a difference tbh... A guy who tuned my dhol said it was tuned to c#, but he also said c# on the dhol goes with almost any song. Hope this helped :)

most DAWs should allow you to check the key of a loop or track by going into track properties, or something analogous.

the ultimate judge of pitch congruence and "on-keyness" is the ear, so if the loop matches the song perfectly, it doesn't matter what key it is in, as no one will be able to tell otherwise. use it if it sounds good; don't worry about the key and other theoretical specifics.

Pre recorded tracks are set in a certain key.... it not being in the same key as your track sometimes causes complications but the average ear may not be able to pick up on it. if you're creating your own song... i would highly suggest live recording
