Random and absolutely no significance

I was reading about this old Christian monk from 6th century Europe.

His name was Gildas Sapiens. I guess Gildas=devotee of god in Latin.

The crazy thing is Gurdas=devotee of guru in Sanskrit

I know the languages are related, but I never realize they were that close. Intense.

http://dictionary.reference.com/dic?q=gild&search=search

maybe his name comes from gild, in Middle English "Gilden" means "Gold"

but it is an interesting observation. the best similarity i have seen between sanskrit and western languages is matri- and patri- meaning mother and father.

In English we have words like matriarchy, patriarchy, padre(spanish), and matronly (english).

In Hindi we have maata and pitaah, and motherland i believe is matriboomi. so those root words stayed similar. i love randomness!

Nice find, bro.

I believe Gildas is a Celtic name, and it does mean servant/devotee of God. Sapiens just means 'knowledgeable' or 'wise' and comes from the Latin verb sapere (to know).

If you're interested in the links between Indian and European languages, here are some places to start:

Comparing languages is fun, but check out comparative mythology too. I use to have field days with that shit back in middle school (from Greek to Norse to Hindu to Egyptian) - legitimately too many similarities.

De means of in most indo euro languages. Main and tu are akin to me and tu in Spanish. Raj is akin to Rex. Pairon is akin to pedos.mann is akin to mind. Haath akin to hand. Kamra akin to chamber. Naam akin to name. Bhai is a contraction of bharatr which is akin to brother. The list is endless. I want to learn sanskrit.
