For a set like SGPD.. yes it is a problem. A lot of them obviously had school, work, and I doubt they can start a new routine right after coming back from NYC from BAB. And its not like they used the exact same routine, at least 50-60% of it was new.
WAIT, what?

It is a problem for for SGPD because they are the only team in the circuit who have real-life obligations? Was the emotional/physical work of travelling to New York too much for the Toronto team to handle and they needed weeks to recover?

And wait, I thought SGPD practiced 6-7 hours 4-5 times a week? I mean, if the geniuses behind SGPD can't create a new set and execute it cleanly with 30 hours a week of practices in 2 months, I really don't know who can...

(This is solely directed to, what I believe, was the stupidest post on BTF in the last few months. Born2BJatt, if you can find me a stupider post, I will take that back.

PS - I feel that a team should still get respect for using the same routine for up to 1 year. SGPD is no exception to the rule. Their nastiness is not solely derived from their creativity, but their execution of their sets as well. My opinion only, of course.

First of all you need to RELAX, take a deep breath.. I know your feeling very emotional about the issue but you don't need to call other peoples opinion stupid just because its different from your own... If you honestly think any team would practise 6-7 hrs 4-5 times a day, then your insane.. keep in mind that people have school and other obligations that's all Im saying. Those obligations really come in between practise times, so when you think about it.. 2 months doesn't seem like a lot..

lets do the math, 6-7 hours a day X 4-5 times a day = thats between 24-35 hours a day....HOLY, NO WONDER THEY WON IDOLS!

You guys aren't seeing my point. Im just going off of what Dheerja said.

"name one team on the circuit that would be able to bring a completely new routine in 2 months"

The same team that is being called on it has done it in the past and i'm just trying to say that the idea of a whole new set in 2 months is not impossible. SGPD did it. NJ did it.

Just by looking at numerous posts within this thread, you can see that people feel SGPD is in a league of its own and that only Nachdi and VCU come in it. Pooja went on to say that elite 8 is the only competition that SGPD has a real challenge. Well if thats the case, its just a matter of trying to push SGPD to bring out more. It's not an insult to them, rather a challenge to push them to their maximum capabilities. Nachdi had a 100% new set in 20 days. 100% new. Im going to re-watch it hold on.....

..yea 100% new...

I know that it is hard for teams to completely change a set in 2 months, but it would've given people more to wow at, thats my point. We all know that SGPD is a very capable team. If they weren't, I would never sit here trying to make this point.
truth. didn't get that from the OP, but i agree.

I was thinking about this just yesterday. Vic can attest, he asked me what i thought right after the comp but pre announcements, and i gave him my honest opinion. And thinking about it after i realized that I hold SGPD to a higher standard because they are so good. I EXPECT more from them, i EXPECT new, fresh, innovative, and entertaining EVERY time. But they're not here to shock and awe with new material each performance, because it may not be the best option and the best show! and that has to be respected and understood, regardless of how good they are.

Vic, you guys tore it up. It was BAB 1.1. Honestly you probably didn't need to change a thing to win, but you STILL did and managed to top it, even with only 5-10% change.

1. I'm not calling other people's opinions stupid. [content removed] :) Everyone, bro, has real life obligations. Everyone has work or school or familial obligations that prevent them from practicing 24/7. SGPD isn't the only team with this set-back.

2. Coming straight from Big Apple Bhangra in New York (2 months ago) is not a reason to not have a new set ready. I'm not saying SGPD should have had a new set ready, I'm just saying this is a poor excuse.

3. Yeah, as Gurbir pointed out, practicing 6-7 hrs 4-5 times a day is quite insane. I never said that. I understand, you misspoke in your post.

4. Vic has come out on BTF and posted the practice schedule for his team. It is public knowledge that SGPD practices significantly more than the average independent bhangra team. With the talent on their team, they clearly do not need to, but it's obvious that they are dedicated and they get the job done at every competition they attend*.

It's not impossible to create a new set in 2 months even if real life obligations and a fraction of SGPD practice schedule. SGPD chose not to. We have seen teams reuse sets for YEARS and still win competitions. It's obvious that SGPD have fans with extremely high expectations. ,

Judges don't sit on youtube
Oops. [Actually, I don't sit on youtube, or watch many bhangra videos, because I don't want to disadvantage a team that I may judge a month or two in the future]

Listen: Sometimes, teams change their routine within 2 months. And it's possible. But as Vic said, it's not always wise. Second of all, to add to that, no team is expected to change their routine EVERY two months. New routines come from teams maybe twice a year. Deal with it. At some point in the near future, I'm sure SGPD will turn over the entire set. You guys are arguing semantics as if SGPD did the same routine for two years.

As for the OP, he seems to make conflicting recommendations: that teams should be more creative, but then he says teams need to learn and execute the traditional steps. o_O

SGPD has created a new month within a 2 month period in the past. They couldve done it again. Also, they're reigning champs. Therefore, I felt they shouldve brought something new because of that. Alot of the set was from BAB I don't get where 50-60% of the set was new. Yeah, they had some new bits but it wasn't 50-60% new.

LOL this whole debate on sgpd's set is by far the funniest thing I've read in the past few days. If this was any other team no one would have had a problem with it. There's a difference between ripping on a team for reusing a set to the point where you've seen it at two competitions you've been to and ripping on team because you watch youtube videos and youre butthurt that you watched two videos that were similar. Like someone said, not everyone in that crowd went to BAB and watches youtube videos, nor do the judges so if they brought the same routine to a different competition big deal, that audience and those judges haven't seen it, thats all that matters.

I agree, it is possible to bring a new set in a short period of time. But we did exactly what we thought was the wisest move. We got the outcome we wanted. NJ brought a new set in 20 days... so when your checking your dates check the stats too. They didn't place at DDA when they placed at masti. Wise move or not. You decide. Judges don't sit on youtube and watch your video, so it was all new to them ;)

Totally agree with you Vic.

I think the question is if teams want to bring new things onto the stage more than they want to place. Most teams want to place, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Also, SGPD is not the only team that reused their set. Abbotsford used a good chunk of the PCBCA routine from VIBC in May. That's FIVE months. But they killed it this time around, and i applaud that. Sometimes its just better to keep going at it until you perfect it. SGPD had a few minor faults at BAB. They completely cleaned them up at Idols. Props for that.
