so jabar both of your statements contradict each other.....on one hand you're saying "women should stick to gidha" and on the other hand you're saying "im not completely against it, but women need to stop dancing manly". So what's it gonna be? Because I also think women shouldn't dance manly, but to say "women should stick to gidha" is ignorant and totally the opposite of the other statement. Be a bit more clear next time you want to make such bold statements in an argument with such a touchy subject.
I am still going to say, Girls doing gidha look better than doing bhangra. By me saying that, girls are not going to stop doing bhangra, they can careless of what i say. If you are going to bhangra atleast don't be manly and open your mouth and wink at the audience and do the shimmy move.

LOL i dont know about other girls teams but that saying doesn't phase me anymore.Girls teams like UBC,MSU,Jawani,NBA and others have proven otherwise many times!
There is a big ass difference between girls doing bhangra and girls dancing like men, which makes both the bhangra and girls look bad.
There are girls teams however that i do like that do bhangra, and there are teams who i completely don't like doing bhangra. Like I said i am not completely against it, but there is a line that girls' teams should not pass and make themesleves look manly. I am not going to name any names but some people know which teams i am talking about and they have been discussed before also, how they add things to their routines which is completely inaapropriate for a family based audience and what basically is that girls' teams try to compete against men's teams and try to beat them by trying to dance like them...relax...
im pretty relaxed actually.Because i see girls teams beat guys teams,i see co ed teams beat all guys teams, i see women judging the competitions.I see it clearly that regardless of what you say..were going to continue to do it.Its still happening. You say u like girls teams that do bhangra that u like. Then u +100 on Pammi Bai saying girls shud stick to ghidda. So what exaclty are u saying? then u say ur not completley against it.
By saying we, I don't know if you are actually representing ALL the women or your own team.First of all i am not talking about your team, there are other girls' teams..second im not a sexist, i did not say girls shouldn't perform. If you look again i said they should do gidha because they look better doing that.
I am not going to name any names but some people know which teams i am talking about and they have been discussed before also, how they add things to their routines which is completely inaapropriate for a family based audience and what basically is that girls' teams try to compete against men's teams and try to beat them by trying to dance like them
i really dont understand what your saying here either.Your saying we add manly moves and that is inappropriate or us being on that stage competing against other mens teams is inappropriate?
i do understand if u feel like somthings u see on stage are not appropriate.Thats ur opinion.Im sure that wasnt that girls or girls teams intention.Hopefully u will see the true passion we have for it,and as girls are a symbol of respect and honor for the east indian community in every aspect,we symbolize it in bhangra as well.
My opinion, im sure it wasn't done intentionally, but if they are going to do bhangra, at least learn what would be appropriate or inappropriate before going on the stage, my opinion.
I don't know how you are symbolizing girl's respect and honor in bhangra. elaborate? If your doing gidha, thats a different story.
I dont know about other girls who do bhangra..but i dont do bhangra to look hot or "sexy".There is always nakhra...But i just wish ppl would keep it innocent and appropriate when they comment on the nakhra. As ppl may think some girls teams dance too manly, saying it looks sexy or hot is not really not an alternative.Im sure girls dont do ghidda to look hot or sexy either.I just personally hate it when ppl say that.blech.
Thats a good thing.
I think what will make all this better is if we make our girls all look really pretty and get some more feminine grace.
+1 we'll work on it!!! love the constructive critisizm always.

Lmao I can't believe this debate is even happening... I have a question for you Pammi Bai supporters- how is the concept of girls doing bhangra having an impact on your day-to-day life? Does it really bother you that much? Don't you have other things to worry about?
I have a lot things to worry about and i am not going door by door telling girls to stop doing bhangra. It is my opinion and if it bothers you that much, well

im happy. I actually do care a lot about my culture and what it will be in another 50 years.
Granted that Bhangra is a piece of Punjabi culture that we embrace in order to stay in touch with Punjabi roots and preserve Punjabi traditions, but at the end of the day it's a goddamn extracurricular activity!!.
For you it may be "
extracurricular activity!!" have fun practicing, chill time, not for me, sorry bruh.
And honestly, I don't know about you guys, but I like meeting girls at various competitions lol.
enough said, that just shows the difference between me and you.
yea people make all the jokes you want.
So before firing up your ego and supporting a statement like "girls shouldn't do Bhangra" (or whatever it was), please think to yourself "how the hell does this affect me? will this be a constructive argument?". And if your argument is that "judges" don't like it, then honestly I can only ask you take the judges off your shrine/pedestal and stop treating them like Gods. As we all clearly know, the unified circuit has the real power to set trends in the Bhangra world, not the judges. So do what you want, what you like, what you believe in- don't be a drone.
You and i were raised differently, if you think you can disrespect a judge, fine do it. I can't do that, he/she is still at a higher status than i am and i don't mean judges like these fuddu judges who have no experience and say they performed "bhu-n-gra" at some competitions, legit judges. Kam, krodh, moh, hunkaar, don't have. sorry. well krodh little bit.
And as far as the arguments that the "boys leave the girls in the dust"/"girls can't do it gracefully" has been proven to be wrong on multiple occasions. If you're going to run a co-ed team you obviously need to work so that you balance out the girl/guy presence and emphasis in your routine. One of the reasons some of the best co-ed teams are that good is because they have achieved this balance (i.e. VCU, Empire, Drexel). Personally, while watching them, never have I felt a male dominance in the routine. And even if boys do seem to overpower the girls in some routines, that's no reason to kick girls off stage- just work harder.
Thank You.
VCU girls dance better than any other girls team and even dance better than i do and probably anybody in ny well except monster or gary (your all good in my eyes)

Judges over here are used to seeing what they see. They have no other style to compare it to...
And what about the judges in India? The same goes for them. They are only used to seeing traditional bhangra performed by men to a live dhol. So if there was to be a competition of NA girls versus India girls (like you suggested), you'd be pitting NA girls into inevitable defeat based on opinion of "how it should be" and "experience".
If you have legit traditional judges here, it won't be much different. It all comes down to modern vs traditional again.
If we are already over here dancing to recorded music we're not traditional anymore, so we might as well be open to the idea of anything being possible when it comes to recorded music.
I am not going to name any names but some people know which teams i am talking about and they have been discussed before also, how they add things to their routines which is completely inaapropriate for a family based audience and what basically is that girls' teams try to compete against men's teams and try to beat them by trying to dance like them...relax...
What about guys teams who:
1) Don't tie chadreh properly and expose themselves
2) Use way too much force during Jhummar and Bhangra
3) Stick their tongues out and make every other facial expression but a smile (no one in particular)
I am not talking about judging guys, i am saying "some" girls try to act all manly.
There are plenty of teams, Guys, Girls, mixed, that have inappropriate material, but your prime example of why girls shouldn't do bhangra is faulty.
Much Respect because I know this is a touchy subject
Nikhil
The prime example of why girls shouldn't be doing bhangra, it all depends on who is reading and who is writing, if you are a traditional type of person then your opinion obviously is going to be very different than a non traditional person, which is most of the people.
I respect you a lot bro

Say whatever i would still agree with judges from india because obviously they have more knowledge and they more experience.
Judges over here are used to seeing what they see. They have no other style to compare it to...
So basically, we can all blame the judges for this(?) They award more points based on these "manly" moves, and girls' teams that compete in competitions where there are all guys teams want to make sure they have a chance at placing. Under those pressures, they add on some things that are questionable to the traditional aspect of bhangra.
Thats my whole point, they trying to compete against men teams and doing moves very weirdly. im sure you love it OJ loolol. Jk jk...
