Red Bull, etc.

I was just wondering...should we as dancers be concerned with the use of red bull and other energy drinks b4 performances, i mean one red bull prior to a performance may not be of major concern, but i have seen/heard of teams really OD on red bull...most of us are in relatively young and in good physical condition, but if the public media is concerned with energy drinks and professional leagues such as the nba or mlb for example, should we not be concerned as well? just a thought, thought it would be good topic for discussion...

I'm so glad you brought this up. The major health concerns are that it includes caffeine and that it is often mixed with alcohol.

Caffeine dehydrates you, but just for a stage performance there's really no big problem as long as you drink water afterwards. But maybe you will feel thirsty and "parched" with dry mouth/throat during your performance - so like, midway through the dance, you are gasping and can't say "Bruahhh" or "Hoy" anymore.

Sidenote: I know you're talking about pre-performance drinking, but a lot of people mix Red Bull with alcohol at afterparties and stuff, which is really dangerous. Think about it, the caffeine in Red Bull is increasing your heart rate and therefore blood pressure - meanwhile, the alcohol is relaxing your vessels since it is a depressant - now you have thin-walled vessels that are dilated/relaxed, and a powerful force of blood rushing through them - thin walls? high pressure? just waiting for a disaster (rupture or something).

Arjun, I agree with you. Dandia Dhamaka - I had 3 Red Bulls before our performance. My throat was so parched that I could barely shout "hoi"s. It was insane and my biggest pet peeve of the entire performance. Never again. Red Bull should be used for staying up late..etc, not for athletic stuff. Gatorade is the way to go for pre-performance drinks.

PS - Post-Performance Drunks, Jagerbombs are the fine. lol

But if you never practice w/ Red Bull or anything, then on the day of the performance you drink it it can mess you up. Basically just don't let anyone drink Monster for the first time on the day of a performance.

Just be careful not to get in a rut where you feel like you have to have an energy drink to stay strong and be hype. We had a guy who thought he could only dance well if he drank Monster, lol.

Also there many different types of drinks out there, for example some are 50/50 natural fruit juice and energy drink, and different drinks have different ingredients. I try to find the healthiest ones and use those, even if they aren't as strong.

If you are trying to keep your body hydrated for the performance, drink loads and loads of water before hand. Start drinking water 24hrs before the performance and keep drinking until the performance.

To know when you have had enough water... when your piss turns clear, that means you body has enough water because your kidneys aren't reabsorbing it.

You do not an energy drink to do bhangra!!

With all the practice you should already have that energy
a drink is not going to make a difference, its all in mind 8)

Havish is absolutely right. The best thing you can do for your body is drink water.

Not even Gatorade is worth it. Gatorade is built to be a replenisher, and so is really only useful if you're sweating and still need to perform at an athletic level (so this means during games/performances or in between them. But not before or after, cause it's basically useless then).

Gatorade will do nothing but make you more thirsty by increasing electrolyte content in your body and convincing it that you need more water (this is why many people are generally still thirsty after drinking gatorade during games).

I used to think that, but drinks like gatorade and red bull have stimulants that give you short term energy boosts...

Nope. As Vick said, it's not all in your mind. It's body chemistry, lol. Gatorade has electrolytes which will hydrate you, giving you the capacity to push yourself further without losing too much water. Red Bull/MONSTER/Sobe No Fear have stimulants (excessive amounts of caffeine, taurine, n-arginine) that will push you harder.

Once your on stage, get your adrenaline pumping - that's all you need.

hahaha
yeah yeah i bet it is...
its still in your mind =)

but I still think you do not need an energy drink to dance.
and if you do, then do a test run and see how your body reacts to it

You dont NEED energy drinks to do anything... It's all personal preference, but to say that it's all in your mind is kinda bold...

i think it comes down to personal preference, i just worry for teams who finish a case or 2 of red bulls between themselves...
