Air India just made Toronto headlines last week: Rat delays Toronto-bound Air India flight
Sep 26, 2009 08:03 PM

If you were thinking of picking up family and friends flying on Air India flight 187 - you may want to reconsider your timing.

An unlisted furry little passenger on the Air India flight from Amritsar to Toronto via London caused an 11-hour delay on Saturday.

A rat was seen onboard flight 187 by some passengers at the Raja Sansi International Airport, said Harry Francis, Canadian manager of Air India.

Security staff played a cat-and-mouse game with the furry little rodent as they scoured the plane, but to no avail. Eventually, Francis said the aircraft was sent for a thorough check, and passengers faced a delay in Amritsar as a relief aircraft was flown in.

"We had no aircraft parked at the airport in Amritsar, so passengers had to wait for a plane to be flown in from Mumbai," said Francis.

Finally, the flight, which was scheduled to take off at 6:35 a.m. from India, could only do so around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday - nearly 11 hours after its scheduled departure time.

"Of course, we apologized to all the passengers," said Francis.

He said that though passengers did not receive any monetary compensation, the airline "fulfilled its responsibility by arranging an alternative aircraft to fly them to their destination."

"All the passengers who were scheduled to be on the plane were given seats on the relief aircraft," said Francis.

According to the Greater Toronto Transit Authority flight arrivals website, flight 187, which was due to arrive at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, was expected to touchdown early Sunday morning at 2:10 a.m.

Francis refused to speculate how the rat could have made its way onboard.

"This isn't common, but it has happened before. It can happen to any airline, and it does," said Francis.

Several other Air India flights were also grounded on Saturday after some pilots went on strike over salary cuts, according to a Times of India article.
