Running a team as a democracy or dictatorship?

Dictatorship at practice, bros everywhere else. If you don't want to murder your captain at some point you aren't training hard enough.

Haha this is totally true, from a captain and non-captain perspective.

We've always done captains rule all-ish, but one thing I liked about our raas team was that they have an "e-board". Basically a group of people who have different positions and different responsibilities in the team (I guess you can call them officers) - given they are also about twice the size of our team.

The past two years when I've been captain, I've implemented a similar structure. For a lot of decisions, we will have the board vote.

Captains run practice, make the choreo (with the help of a coach), and do most of the logistical stuff. We have the board handle things like finances, social stuff, and other things that would apply to a collegiate team.

I feel like it helps to have an extra hand in things and divide up some of the work, especially since we're all also busy with school. And we try to make the "eboard" made of dancers who have been on the team for at least a year.

Having a board also helps since collegiate teams have such a huge turnover after the captains graduate. This way we have people on the team who already know how most of the shenanigans are run and don't have to learn everything on their own.

does anyone ever feel being captain is sometimes an underappreciated (although often highly rewarding...) job? (the question is mostly posed to college teams)

+1

Highly rewarding when you see your team do well and really work as a family/unit. All the days and nights spent thinking of ways to better the team, down to the smallest details is something only a captain (or person in charge) will know. I know at times people will bash on a captain, but I try to make sure they know how much I care about them and the team.
