In an era where "Bhangra Funk" is considered the standard of good Bhangra to the masses, it is time to save our Lok Naach. What can the circuit as a whole, and us as individuals, do to promote real bhangra to the masses. We all know how beautiful watching a live shykka segment is or watching teams like SPD drop folk fire. How can we make this the standard of mainstream Bhangra that people look up to and not the trash promoted by "Bhangra Funk" and "BollyShake"

Also the circuit is dead and the fire is missing

I don't think by any means Bhangra Funk and BollyShake are promoting trash - it is their own interpretations of the art form, and they are still doing the community a service by making bhangra more mainstream and getting more people interested in it.

If we want the masses to see more bhangra that emulates the style a live team would (trying not to arbitrarily just throw out the word "folk"/"traditional" in here, but you guys know what I mean) - then dance groups need to start putting in the same amount of effort to create high quality, high production videos, and content in general.

Bhangra Funk and Bhangra Empire are two groups that come to mind who create really high quality, well produced content - and many people will complain that this isn't the style of bhangra they want promoted - the only answer is to take the style of bhangra you want promoted - and match their quality.

I'd love to see this happen. I think there have been some attempts at this, the biggest one that jumps to my mind is @lavesh and his work with Learn Bhangra App and now with Broadway - hopefully bigger and better things keep emerging.

Solid point Sumeet. Another team that comes to mind is Top Naach. They have the basis to do what empire does but better. Well trained "folk" dancers. Hope they can push out more "traditional" content to the mainstream in the future

I would love to see Top Naach do this - they definitely have the talent and brains behind the operation to do so

I agree with Sumeet.

Bhangra Funk and Bollyshake are expressions of dance from the people that perform them. You can't call it trash simply because you don't like it. To be honest I enjoy watching those videos just because they are different.

Those dance forms are growing faster than the bhangra circuit because they constantly create content for followers. They release videos and run classes/workshops on the regular whereas the bhangra circuit only releases comp videos (sometimes even that doesn't happen). Consider Bruin2017 and you can see only 4 teams have agreed to release their videos because they are gonna use that set at future comps. Those videos were released in a span of 4 days with no consistent upload rate since (understandable because comps don't occur regularly but this is still a pretty shit issue).

Groups like Top Naach have some serious potential to push the 'traditional' bhangra dance into mainstream so hopefully they keep at it. Also I think bhangra empire leave their robotic style for the stage because their dance videos are actually really good. Bhangra empire is doing good things for our circuit whether people dislike the group or not. Don't forget Manpreet Toor and Lavesh from LearnBhangraApp. Again they are people who consistently upload and push out content which gets to followers. Consistency is key to the growth of the circuit.

On a side note:
I did like some of the videos that the Australian circuit put out on TheBhangraHub YouTube channel. They have routines from various teams in addition to comp videos and other random things. Even that channel struggles with regular content but I think that's because the scene is smaller than it is here. The guys in the UK upload their mixer videos in addition to their comp videos which is also cool. Uploading videos of routines and mixers would be a cool thing to do in the NA circuit if they could somehow get onto GTV with it's already established audience base. Our NA circuit has things like dailybhangra but even that is becoming more of a paid promotion money grab than bhangra videos.

I agree with the other's sentiments that although Bhangra Funk is not folk bhangra they are promoting bhangra to the masses and at the same time fulfilling a career in dance. Also let's be honest they performed with Diljit at the IIFA awards and sometimes only through the correct avenues are you able to book gigs such as that. However, I have a lot of respect for groups and individuals like Top Naach and Lavesh for trying their own thing because they have all came from very respectable teams in the circuit in the past. These individuals understand what bhangra truly is and have competed in the North American Bhangra circuit. I hope that they get as big if not bigger than the bhangra funk initiative moving forward. It would be interesting to see how they can keep it to the roots as much as possible without having to incorporate other dance forms into the folk dance.

I totally agree with what has been said.

Top Naach is putting some really great stuff alongside @klasikhz (dat 50 cent/kuldeep manak mix doe---FIRE). For those who have not seen any of the weedios....check out their page. The passion to promote folk bhangra is real alongside the fact that you get to check out another hot Klasikhz mix. Respect ADT & the rest of the crew and best of luck next weekend @ The Kennedy Center. :)

Learn Bhangra is also doing some really big things coming up especially @ DD CON and @ the State Department alongside Top Naach next month! The progress that I have seen this team make is incredible and I look forward to see what the team does in the future! Great work as usual Lavesh! :)
