Selecting Competitions

What factors go into selecting and applying to competitions for your team? Which ONE FACTOR is MOST IMPORTANT?

Costs/Location? - Nearby competitions means less costs for travel and even hotels.

Prestige? - Going to prestigious competitions and more well-known events brings your team more fame, recognition and street cred in the circuit. Also, going to DC for a competition seems more rewarding than going to Cleveland, OH.

Chances of Placing? - Going to competitions where you're likely to place seems practical even if competitions are poorly run and small.

Anything Else? Any other reasons that you may select a competition?

What factors are important to you and your team and which one factor do you think is most important?

Since we are beginners...we talked about going local...so in Ca we have about about 6 comps: Bruin, Socal, Nachda, DDA, Fresno and Davis (if they have it) ....
cost is involved but mainly because we want to put our name out. having stage experience, chemistry amongst ourselves is better as for us before we go out to other states.
Placing is out of the question as of...but hope to

I think it really differs,

Some teams are doing bhangra for the fun of it and for the experience. They probably don't care about going to a compeition they could win at as apposed to a competition that is located in a hot stop like Florida. Just going all over and competing and experience, and relationship you make is worth more than a trophy.

For other teams it would be winning. Some teams are about winning. I think its just crazy to go to a compeition that you know you wouldn't place in. for example a modern team competing at a traditional compeition. Especially taking into account the amount of money you put in and the practice time.

I think going to a competition that we know we can place is probably one of the driving factor. but the Experience is also important. Being able to go to Cali to compete, meet people and bugg out is also a driving factor.

So i am have to say Location(in the sense of a place you would like to visit) and Placing

No offence or anything but not too many ppl remember random comps in high school venues and stuff like that.

but for a team starting out, hit anything you can get..... no pun intended

You need to look at who is organizing the show. A lot of competitions are BS and are run poorly. Travel costs are a big expense, but don't bust your *ss getting ready for a show that will be poorly run.

umm sometimes local comps are more appealing.........i.e. royale and gotham city remix......2 blocks away from where we practiced.......its just more convenient

I think it's all about the cost. Most Toronto teams do it to have fun, but the cost of getting to the comp, competiting and then coming back is a huge factor. We'd love to go to every comp if possible but we can't. Local comps here aren't won for the cash it's the bragging rights that come with winning which is why it's always a gamble to put your title on the line here.

1. Cost (Hit up Travelocity, Expedia, and Mapquest)
2. Competition itself (If I heard a lotta people had fun their and say "It's a great comp" or it's well run)
3. Location (If it's a sweet area we wanna visit)
4. Other factors like special events going on or if it's for a good cause (i.e. So You Think You Can Naach --> ASHA for Education)
5. Variety (I wanna do comps that favor "traditionality", comps that favor modern teams, a comp that's intense, a show that's just fun, etc., I wanna hit up different types of comps)

Chances of placing mean little to me right now because it's our first year, I just wanna get out there and get established and make a name for ourselves. Basically if we give a performance I am proud of, and somebody leaves saying "Yeah, that ASD was sweet, too" then mission accomplished. I would rather go to a comp with better teams that will most likely place over us than go to a comp w/ little competition. If you compete against the best it will only make you better.

I agree, for new teams jsut try getitng in wherever you can and then prestige comes into play and cost is always a issue.

Yeah, I completely agree. Different teams start for different reasons and have different origins. Their captains are different people with different goals in mind. And thus, what they want in competitions and for their teams differ alot.

I just wanted to see where you guys and your teams tend to want in a competition.

Pretty much agree with those 3 things
Cost is the major issue for all teams I think
and we like to stick to going to traditional competitions only since we're a live team
going to a competition with a live section is the best for us

I agree with most of the previously mentioned factors, But I also think its necessary to be realistic about your ability as a team. I metion this because the topic is picking and APPLYING competitions to participate in. Obviously, if youre accepted in a line up, your team has the ability to compete to some level. But with more and more competitions requiring application fees, it is also cost-effective to measure your team's talent, and your chances of A) gaining entrance to a competition and B) your ability to perform at that level.

For example, being part of a small school, first year team in Florida last year, the team only participated in one small, statewide competition. We were then supposed to perform as an exhibition at Miami Bhangra Competition. Due to a dropped team, we ended up competing, but we were far out of our league when being realistic. It is unlikely that we would have applied to such a competition.
But now, being part of a new all-state team, the platform for competing is much larger, and the level of talent for performing is much greater. Bigger, more competitive comps are no longer out of the question.
