In honest opinion, I didn't really find this set all that entertaining...the song choice seemed kinda bland and a lot of the "gimmicks" i felt were kinda boring and involved more acting and lip singing then any wow/creativity kinda factor (well gimmick for example). I get the feel that this team tries to win over more older punjabi judges with classic punbjai songs/tunes/props,etc rather then appeal to today's more modernized crowd. There isn't anything wrong with this if thats your "style" but understand that competing in the music category in todays day and age takes a lot more creatvity and outside of the box thinking. As i viewer I want to be pumped up and hyped watching your set, keep me on the edge of my seat, have me guessing whats about to happen. Keep in mind, you can be folk AND entertaining. NYPD does a great job of this. They do a great job of using more folk songs while throwing in the occasional gimmick (foot slide, light saber khunday thingy majiggar, pyramid build, etc) to keep you entertained and wow you too. If folk is your style, great, nothing wrong with that, but theres more ways to pump a crowd up rather then lip singing a classic punjabi song and doing the whole "guy-girl) acting skit which is kind of plaid out now. All in all, you guys have great dancers, talent is very uniform and equal. As a viewer its fun seeing something we've never seen before, (lets be real, AEG at Bruin 2013...HOLY SHIT), I think if you guys step away from typical "guy-girl" skits and lip singing and think of stuff that involves something much more creative and dynamic you guys are definitely on your way to becoming a great team.

Honestly, I wasn't a fan of this set at all. Being a fan of shan-e, I expected a lot more. You guys have a tendency to cater to competitions, but this set didn't. My biggest issue with this set is that there was a lot of acting going on and less bhangra. With MCB being a traditional comp I could see what you guys were trying to do, but there it was just overboard. Too long of a mela scene and too many stop and gos. This set would have worked at a vaisakhi mela, but not a competition. Plus, the part with the jumps is just old. I thought to myself, "again, really?!" Bhangra is its own spot and gimmicks its own. Don't let gimmicks overpower bhangra.

Not at MCB. At MCB, I am sure the judges thought this was too modern. Judges were super folk (to a fault IMO). Shan-e is a creative team, this was them trying to being a more muted version of themselves, to cater to the folk judges. Turns out, the judges wanted it to be ever more muted. This music category might as well have been judged with the rubric of a live category.

Super Folk teams, go to MCB. Borderline folk/modern teams, don't bother if winning matters to you. Because, you will lose.

cute username bro, i'm sure you're an honest authority on bhangra. i get that you weren't entertained bro, now is that because shan-e-punjab's set didn't do justice to bhangra or because you lack an appreciation for bhangra? i'm sure anyone on SEP gives exactly zero fucks that you think their song selection was bland or that their gimmicks weren't hype enough. learn to appreciate strong proper dancing more, i liked the set, kato segment was fresh.

Ya Shan E brings it every comp and they did get 2nd place, so the judges obviously saw something they liked. Songs were pretty dope, don't know what Honest Truth or Archana are talking about..

LOL and your an authority figure? Hahahaha Hardeep Singh, you my friend are the prime example of whats wrong with this site ie: full time btf thugs who dont dance or have ever dance and hop on teams rosters and somehow think they have credibility/authority to judge teams. Just because you go to every comp and tie peoples pagga doesnt mean your some authoritative figure of bhangra. I've danced at some of the biggest comps in the circuit for 4 years (Elite, Bruin, WBBC) , I think i know what im talking about since I ACTUALLY HAVE DANCED SWEETIE. my critique of shan e was honest, ie my username (im glad you thought it was cute), just becuase i didnt like the set doesnt mean i discredit the team. I know what shan e's capable of, i just didnt think they brought there full A game to this one. I thought the lip singing was way overdone and plaid out. Again, its my opnion and im entitled to it. im sorry it made you mad. you can go back to playing with your little plastic shikkay now.

Really enjoyed this performance, congrats on the placing.

I wish you guys would incorporate some more changes to the set, though. (I'm not insinuating that you need to make more changes in accordance with your interpretation of the rubric/judging, but just in general.) I know there were some, but for most of the time, I felt as though I was just re-watching the Idols video from 2013 with some switches to the choreo and order of songs in the mix. And some of the segments, including the jumps, have been recycled over and over again. Accomplishing 36 consecutive jumps with good energy is always impressive, but less so when see you it time and time again. It's still good addition to the set, though.

I love the jhoomer segment to Dhol Jawaniyan Mane. The red jodi executes that segment extremely well with lots of grace and nakhra. And it's always nice to see a team incorporate a prop/gimmick that (kind of) goes along with the song lyrics, instead of something arbitrary.

Let's not get into a quarrel by attacking each other's usernames, characters, and/or actions (non-relevant things to this topic).

I, for one, love to hear & read critiques from all sorts of people. Whether the person be a former dancer, current dancer, chimta player (<3 u guys), or just a fan of the NA bhangra circuit. It all doesn't matter much to me as long as the person can provide a thoughtful critique to the team OR state what things "turned them off" from a set.

With that said, I'm glad "The Honest Truth" actually goes out on a limb and provides critiques (sometimes in favor of certain elements within a set/performance and sometimes not so much). If you read his/her previous posts, you'll easily see they are not just talking out of their ass.

I don't care if a team has won 1st at every major competition this season - every team out there can push themselves to the next level and improve in various ways. Teams should know and expect all sorts of criticism on sets from the judges, people who saw the performance live, and people on BTF.

I agree with Daman in that I basically saw an exact repeat of the Bhangra Idols 2013 performance from about 5-6 months back. As a fan, I was expecting a little bit of a change (nothing drastic) to make this set standout a bit more. I guess that the team might have figured that since they won 1st at Idols with this exact set, why not repeat what has worked? Since the judges were completely different - to them, it was all "new." I personally feel the lineup at MCB was a lot more diverse & stacked, so that's why this set might have not placed 1st. I love certain "gimmicks" that go along with the dancing like the whole Allah Jaane segment, so I was fine with seeing that twice, but overall I wanted more variety! I like most of the songs used and I have to give respect to GSingh for the great mix.

Bring something new for us soon Shan E :) Best of luck!

~ Basim :)

Basim, my point exactly. My critique is my critique, i'll say whatever I want. I'll do my due diligence to the circuit and give honest critques that can help newer, younger teams as well as older more experienced teams in the cirquit instead of just lavishing or flowing there video with "great job!...congrats!..woo hoo!". Im not a dick, im just honest. Next post time, i'd rather not go back and forth with this Shawn Bradley.

I agree with you. I am not some sort of naive person who thinks he knows more then someone else and isn't open to critiques.. My team is very well open to critiques and we welcome it from anyone who's seen our set. I personally get mad when people who think just because there "Full Time Members" and have 1,000 + posts they now know bhangra and are entitled to power or authority over people who are new to this site. Im new to the site, not the circuit, lets be clear. I've put a lot of time into my teams sets and we've been fortunate enough to be quite successful at what we do. Its insulting to me to see someone who thinks they know bhangra simply by spending countless hours on this website and then thinking they can attack teams who put god knows how many hours, days and nights, into their sets. Don't attack my credibiltiy if you don't know who i am and don't think you've earned credibiltiy by having time in your life to make 1,000 posts, simple as that. My critique of Shan E was clear, i didnt like the constant lip singing and i thought the "Well" gimmick was kind of good-for-a-vasakhi mela-not-a-bhangra-comp ish. That doesn't mean i hate the team or find them mediocre. I gave a critique BTF, not a hate message, calm down. Basim, I thank you for understanding my point of view, you my friend are a good man and im glad to see you moderating this site very unbiasedly.

;) read the disclaimer shotu, i've obviously never danced on a team before, or know anything about bhangra, or actually even know how to dance, even my paggan suck bro  lol. it is cute that you have actually danced at competitions, really you should be proud of yourself for that, i can totally see why someone with such an illustrious career would wanna be anonymous on btf. you're obviously scared of revealing your true identity and having your massive fan base stalk you on here. don't worry bro i'll keep playing with my plastic shikkay, i'm pretty sure your teams about to be playing with em pretty soon too lol.

the lip syncing occurred for a minute, during which members of the team came out onto stage from both sides, which is a nice "traditional" way to introduce dancers before a set instead of just bam start out in saap segment positions. the mela happened for about 30 seconds, typical mela, no good or bad points, the team sang along first few words of veli yaar, then started saaps, good saap segment but a lil too fast, clean uniform dancing , everyone played saaps properly, no one over extended or looked like they were trying to break their saaps.
there's also a reason they picked the songs they did, look at the song list and tell me if you can figure out the themes of those songs. props to them for sticking to proper songs.
chimta player brought out the well, it matched the lyrics of the song, 2 dancers danced around the well and used it as a gimmick while the rest of the team danced. i like more complex jhoomer segments, so i think it could have been better choreod. but the gimmick itself is no less relevant to a competition stage than having balloons or projectors or magical tricks.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess he was on BK since he mentioned elite 8, bruin and WBBC.

Congrats, Shan E Punjab, on your 2nd place! Given the context of a very folk rubric, I still felt like this should have edged over Virsa for the win.

With that said, I think you guys can do a lot better and I'm sure with time, I have no doubt that you guys will.

Overall, I thought the mix and formations were good. The general choreography was simple.

I think the general issue is that your dancers are young and for the most part, it shows on stage. The difficulty in evaluating your performance is that often times we factor in the age of the dancers when comparing from performance to performance, but the reality is that there should be a standard that should be adhered to, especially at competitions where you're competing against older teams. It feels like you guys are stuck between dancing like a junior team and a senior team but when competing against other senior teams, you should be evaluated as such.

In my personal opinion, all-guy senior teams should strive to dance like "men". They should have power and josh yet also have discipline and be precise in execution, especially for graceful segments. When I watched your performance, I really didn't get that. You guys are soft with your execution, arms are not always fully extended and it feels half-assed at times. For example, at the end, during the jumps, some dancers are alternating hands with the jumps, others kinda seem like they should be doing that as well, but it's sloppy and doesn't look like they are at all. You guys are decently clean for most of the routine, but the quality of dancing needs to be improved.

You guys do a lot of jumps, spins and kicks, but they're not executed fully and sometimes poorly coordinated. A hop gets you off the ground. A jump gets you height. You guys brought back your jumping segment from last year and unfortunately at times, it seems messy with dancers doing different arms, not fully executing the steps (ie: pataka) and only getting a few inches off the ground. It honestly just fails to impress me. As I always say, doing 8 very clean, high-energy jumps is always better than attempting 32 that feel like a struggle and are poorly coordinated.

Your red jodi is your saving grace. They take center stage for most of the routine and relative to the rest of the team, have superior stage presence and nakhra. Some of the other dancers smile occasionally but many of them wear their fatigue on their faces. It feels like your dancers are going through the motions. With the exception of the reds, they don't look like they're truly into dance and without jodi interactions, the rest of the dancers feel like back-up dancers to your red jodi for most of the routine. On most elite teams, your attention will draw to various dancers at different parts of the routine as they come up to center stage which should give the impression that the team, as a collective whole, is sick, not just the first jodi. The goal should be to have various dancers shine through at different points of the routine (without them detracting from the rest of the team). But I have no doubt that the rest of the dancers will improve and get more front time in the future.

I agree with Archana and The Honest Truth in that it felt like too many of the gimmicks were acting ones. I have nothing against acting gimmicks and I really liked how dancers continued dancing in the back (though, at times, it did propagate this notion that they were back-up dancers), but don't over do them. Exhibit your creativity in different ways and cater to different people in the audience too.

Your new vardiyan are definitely more distinct in design than your previous one and it's great that you guys tried to be more creative. However, I think the cut of outfit is different and not as tight-fitting as the Romesh cuts which gives the impression that they're too big for your dancers, which make them look younger/smaller. Not the biggest fan of the difference in kurta from front, sleeves and back - I feel teams these days opt for such design modifications just for the sake of it without a bigger picture in mind. I love the stripes on the turlas though, very happy that a team brought that back.

Overall, congrats on the 2nd place. You guys have a lot of potential. If you guys are placing/winning at this level, I can only imagine how well you guys will do once dancer execution is taken up a notch.
