Sikh Discrimination At Bars/Nightclubs

The same thing that happened to the man in that article happened to me at two local bars/nightclubs where I was turned away no matter how much I tried to convey that what I wear on my head is an article of my religious faith.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Advice?


Edit: I'd also like to add that I went as far as speaking to the owners of these establishments that said "we are a private establishment, therefor we can discriminate against whatever we want."

GRRRRRRR Places like this frustrate me.

Travel in a group with a decent amount of girls, and make sure if you get rejected-everyone in that group leaves. No bouncer/club owner wants to lose business (or be blamed for it). A group of 6 could mean they make $300+ from a cover charge, watered down drinks, and creepy/ugly men trying to buy the girls drinks. If one of you goes, then the club loses a chance to make $300 off of just 6 people.

I will be honest-the last time this happened to my group of friends was about 4 years ago. The bouncer did eventually let my friend in because he would have lost 10 people's worth of business that night. Ever since then, my friends and I haven't had this problem... and we've been to much more than our fair share of places in New York.

However if you come across a place that still manages to turn you down, even with 6+ people or more, then just think to yourself that it probably wasn't worth it anyway... because there's a good change that it isn't.

This happened to me a total of three times between two local bars/nightclubs. 2 of those times I was with approx. 10 people with 4-5 girls as well. Everyone else was either white, or a girl that didnt wear any sort of pug or anything. We all left.

This sort of thing infuriates me.. its happened to my friends on a number of occasions. its happened to me once but in a total opposite way when I was in the phase of wearing patka/bandanna things to clubs.. turned away for NOT wearing a turban lol! later found out a Sikh guy owned it.. :/

To be honest, this type of thing just goes to show how we still have a long way to go to dispel certain notions as well as just educate the masses. Suffolk county, long island is a relatively homogeneous population compared to urban centers. Education and information (and time) is what'll be needed, and from our part...patience? I don't really have an answer, but I felt this had to be said.

Don't wanna start anything here, but just saying that since you are Sikh, you know better than to have drinks at a bar/nightclub. Go do some paath and ask the gyani ji at your local gurudwara why they won't let you in.

people attend bars or nightclubs without any intention to drink. i'm not sikh, but i don't drink, and yet still go to bars and nightclubs often with my friends who do drink.

I never said I was there to drink. I'm sure youve been to wedding receptions and parties where there have been gyanis, and alcohol was served, but they didnt drink. Just because alcohol was served doesnt mean a Sikh should "know better" than to go in.

Okay, I will go further..most people goes in there to find a chick and get drunk/grind their junk on some girl. Sikh who is drinking? A fucking shame. Now, you might say okay there's lot of sikh kids who drink. I will tell you they all are freaking morons if they claim to be a Sikh.


Second opinion..If it was just for hanging out with friends than yeah you got yourself a case that those bouncer(i call them motherfuckers) can discriminate. Sikh coalition will sort some out soon. Good luck homes..
