Sin City Review

I know it's a late review, but we got caught up with school and whatnot right after Sin City.

Originally I wrote out everything that happened day to day (paragraph per day) and talked about what our experience was…but after reading over it was boring as hell. So i decided to make bullets and get straight to the point.

Before I start, I want to thank Aman Atwal and everyone else that was a part of Sin City Bhangra. I know they tried hard to make this competition run smoothly and make all the teams happy. I have no doubt hosting a competition is a tough task. I hope by telling our experience, the next time this comp is hosted, these things will be improved! (and please take no offense to anything I said, it's all constructive )

After being accepted:
- No formal packet/email telling us everything that had to be done (when/where to send mix, intro video, lighting, itinerary, housing, etc)
- we received a few scattered emails about hotel costs/acceptance fee
- this should be a lot more formalized so all the teams know exactly what is going on
- Communication***
- This was a major problem throughout the comp/pre comp
- We would have to wait weeks before getting an answer or no one knew the answer to our questions
- It wasn't until a day or two before the comp we finally received an answer about our mix/intro video…we were told to bring it on a cd or iPhone…Also, Aman knew nothing about lighting cue sheets/lights. He simply said that we could talk tot he tech guys during the stage rehearsal.

Thursday/day we got to vegas (12 of our dancers came a day before the comp started)
- We are greeted with one 4 passenger car (we have 12 people)
- the driver didn't seem to know we had 12 people
- after finally getting enough drivers we get to the hotel
- driver's remark on the comp: once we get to the hotel one of the drivers asked us if we were going out tonight. We told them we weren't going to drink until the competition was over and he replied this to one of the other passengers "haha they think that this is a real competition *continues to laugh*?". Honestly, after hearing this I was pretty pissed. I don't think anyone that is part of the competition (no matter what you think of the comp) should be telling a team this. Texas Bhangra has almost all new dancers this year and this was their first competition… and this is what they hear about it….

Friday
- We were told to be ready at 7 for busses to the mixer - we get a call at 5:40 telling us bussing are coming at 6
- We load the bus and it doesn't leave till 6:40
- Mixer started almost two hours late
- Mixer consisted of one 15 minute game and then music
- Ran out of veg food (which was dinner) within 5 minutes (served pizza the night before the comp.) -Charged people for water (I found this to be ridiculous. Not only did we have to pay for water at the mixer, there was not much water available/provided for the teams throughout the weekend/competition day)
- Wasn't until now they told the teams about the mix, intro video, schedule - they are asked these questions by the teams, so if no one asked they wouldn't have said anything
- intro video: the girl that was speaking to us went to Aman and asked about it. His response, " we don't need one, right?"
- rehearsal schedule: "the first team starts at 9 and the rest will follow in 30 minute intervals. You are all in college, do the math"
- They didn't have enough rides to take all the teams back,
- our coach rented a car for the weekend, so he was helping
- one of the drivers came out of the car with a bottle of alcohol (after just have dropping a few people off). I'm not going to go on about how this is a big issue, it should be pretty common sense

Saturday
- Ride for stage rehearsal came late (this was expected by then)
- We still had not been given a liaison. Everytime we asked we were given a new person (and this had been going on from before we arrived to Vegas). When we did have a "liaison" he said he had no idea what was going on. For the better part of the comp we were finding things out by talking to other teams (who were also in the same boat)
- They ended up not using lighting cues (which they told us at the mixer to have ready for stage rehearsal)
- They told us they would be bringing us lunch to the rehearsal venue. We didn't get any until we were back at the hotel. There was hardly any food left for us and only meat options were available (and we confirmed that half our team was veg about a few hours before this…for the third time). We never got a proper meal until about 5pm
- Thanks to Padma for bringing us the food
- We get to the venue and finding our designated rooms was complete chaos. No one is directed us on where to go. There were three floors of rooms and everyone was running around looking for their/a room
- Competition starts a bit late (expected for any Indian run event)
- We didn't meet with the judges until about an hour before the show started (we were suppose to have met with them earlier in the day)
- We were not given any kind of rubric/grading sheet before the comp
- The judges were cool, wish we could have had more time to talk with them
- After the show started, everything went pretty well
- After party was a complete fail - no one knew what was going on or if there was still one going on(later found out it was canceled or something)
- Most of the teams just wanted to hang out with the rest of the teams and have fun, so everyone just organized it on their own

Sunday
- So this wasn't really part of the comp, but we had 6 dancers staying till Monday morning
- In the morning we met with Aman to see what the room issues were (we told him we wanted one room for Sunday night). When we go down, Duke's captain is also waiting there. Turns out they only had one room they could give and the rest of the teams that were staying would have to go to another hotel. Ashvin said we could stay, so big thanks to him

The last thing is practice space. All the teams roamed around all night trying to find practice spaces, only to be kicked out by hotel security. Even the spot Aman had assigned for the teams was later prohibited from being used. This put a lot of stress on the teams and we had to go searching all over the hotel as well as near by parking lots to practice. It wasted a lot of time and energy.

This is what Texas Bhangra's experience was during Sin City Bhangra. It wasn't the best, but we got to compete and meet a lot of awesome, friendly teams and do what we all love to do, bhangra. Aman apologized after for any trouble, etc we had. It was a fun competition (I mean it's Vegas baby!), but hopefully the years to come will be a lot better!

Luckily all the teams helped each other out and bonded. Also Aman did do his best to fix and accommodate for all the problems faced during the weekend. It would have been easier on him and the teams, though, if it had been better planned out to begin with. This is why we are giving this review out. It also seemed like he was the only one in charge because anyone else we talked to had no idea what was going on. From this I assume there was no Sin City Bhangra board, having one might help.

Again, none of this was meant to offend anyone (Sin City, other teams, anyone involved with the comp). So if I did, my apologies.

Congrats once again to the placing teams and thanks everyone who helped us out during comp day!

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

This is exactly why the circuit is dead.

Thank you for sharing this shocking review. Please, people, if a competition doesn't send you basic correspondence, the rubric or any information in the weeks leading up to the show, please, DROP OUT. That is a tell tale sign of pure failure.

I mean, the circuit's always been like this though, for every well run competition there are 2 which are run by amateurs (Bhangra Allstars comes to mind). At my first competition, we saw our liaison snorting some kind of pills at the preparty, and he wanted to drive us back to the hotel later (didn't happen). It sucks for the teams which had to put up with that, but it's at least good that no one was hurt by that kind of shit. I wish that there were more competitions that are run by established teams or people who have been part of teams before, competing teams would at least be confident that things are being handled properly.

Liaisons and anyone that is involved in the competition should be held to higher standards and responsibility. I really hope this does not happen often, it was really sad to see this (more so when I am with some of my dancers who's first comp was Sin City...and this is what they see is going on)

This is my first year as captain and this was our first major competition of the year...I have definitely learned that lesson.

Once we were accepted into Boiler, they sent an acceptance packet, had deadlines, rubrics, and certain things to follow. So much more organization.

I am surprised this competition had a second year and on top of that, didn't make any improvements. I judged last year and we weren't given pens or lights on our tables and were told to use our iPhones for note-taking. It was midway the first act that Swizzee and a few of the DRP girls on the committee saved the day

So much potential in Vegas

Yes your right it wasnt organized well! It was lacking in alot of ways, the guy that organized this Sin City Bhangra should have known better! He tried to bring the Indian culture together .....what was he fucking thinking? He organized the competition put in his own money to bring the indian roots to Vegas, Reallyyy?? Is he MAD? Why would he do such a stupid thing for the our community? Seriously everyone, try organizing something huge on your own .....and I want to see the feedback on it!

^ LOL. Snapped man! IMHO after reading Sajans review of this comp, it really dissapoints me of how bad the Comp was organized, but we still have to consider how many years they have done it for. Only two. I guess it's ok. Hopefully SinCity will read this and try better to improve these issues. I still can't believe it though. Bhangra Blitz outdid Sin City. Haha

It's obvious from your tone and choice of words that you're either one of the organizers of Sin City or someone that knows them well, and feels the need to try to "anonymously" gain them some sort of sympathy/kudos for "trying" to run what is described as a shit-show of a competition.

It's one thing for the organizer to come out and apologize to the teams. It's another thing entirely to passive aggressively defend the competition with irrational statements under the veil of anonymity.

State your affiliation or connection to the competition. (ie: "I am a committee member", "I am a dancer from a team that competed", "I am an audience member", "I am the only grandson of the father of the uncle of the organizer"). State your perspective/opinion or side of the story. And do it without the self-righteous attitude and useless references to inside drama. No one throws a competition JUST for culture and no one is going to care what went down if your posts sound biased and whiny.

This is so pathetic, and btw your irrational and patronizing behavior to sue proves that you are on the Commitee or might know the person who ran the comp fairly well. Just a heads up this kind of attitude will tarnish your reputation (as a competetion) that you have made so far which will not be beneficial to y'all in the upcoming years.

Fairly confident Ashikka is not Aman Atwal who was the organizer...so take everything with grain of salt. The point is true though that almost everyone who was supposed to help the committee backed out the week of the comp leaving Aman and Shafali basically alone to run the whole thing.

There's not going to be a Sin city 3, so w/e. the local community there just doesn't care and isn't supportive
