adding onto to what jeeti said, even when/if bhangra is established as an actual genre, its not going to be real bhangra. Its going to be bollywood style bangra. so sad. Wouldnt you love it if traditional bhangra was accepted in mainstream pop culture? Rather than a bollywood style bhangra that seems like an immitation of hip hop?
You can make that argue for almost all genres of dance anyway. Case in point: "Hip Hop" is not a dance form. The "traditional" dance form was bboying... and is nothing like what is now called Breakdancing. No general audience these days appreciates the intricacies of uprocking, proper six-stepping, and freezing to the right beat in a song.. just like no general audience appreciates the nuances of traditional bhangra.
The fact of the matter is, if you want something to be accepted in mainstream pop culture.. it has to be popular (hence the name pop). Traditional bhangra will never be as entertaining to the masses as modern bhangra is. That's why I suggested having something like the KJ era of Bhangra in So You Think You Can Dance would be the best medium. When they entered the scene everyone was crazy about KJ because they were modern but had a bit of a traditional flair (compared to the rest of the teams at that time).
People need to get past the Traditional vs. Modern POL attitude that has emerged in the last 2-3 years. Traditional Bhangra is great for people who have an incredible passion for the culture and dance form, but if you want to see it in the mainstream... instead of just bagging on bollywood style bhangra... try to find a way to entice the audience who don't know the history of the dance form by encorporating traditional elements into something they can see multiple performances of and not think that they just saw the exact same routine.
