Hey,

Here is Spartan Bhangra's (representing Case Western Reserve University) performance from Bhangra in the Burgh 9!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqsi1gBW8kU

Being a young team in the circuit, we would really love to hear your critiques. Please feel free to comment directly on this thread, PM me, or email me at cwru.spartan.bhangra@gmail.com to provide us with any feedback you have. Although we've worked hard to improve significantly since last year, we're really looking forward to seeing more critiques such that we can build off of this performance and take our set to the next level this coming Spring.

Orange: Aarondeep Deol and Sunakshi Puri
Red: Neelesh Satpute and Hansaa Gopalakrishnan
Green: Raghav Tripathi and Medha Narwankar
Yellow: Rishabh Mazmudar and Santosh Coorg

Special shout out to our DJs at First Class Beats (Kavin, Ram, and Amar) for an amazing mix and for working with us during the latest hours of the night to get our changes to the mix faster than we have ever gotten them before! Also, thanks to Harjot Hundal/GTV for recording our debut on GTV and getting us the highest quality video to watch over and over again for the years to come.

Shout out to our liaisons, Pravek (PK) and Isha, for accommodating us for everything we wanted and needed for the duration of the weekend. We hope to see you guys again next year at Burgh :)

Also, huge thanks to our judges for already giving us a significant amount of valuable feedback to incorporate into our competition set for next semester. Your support of us as we have grown into a competitive team has been crucial to our growth.

Finally, thanks to every single person who helped out with our set, tying paghan (special shout out to Davis, Harbind, Partik, Vick, Ishaan, and Buckeye Bhangra for helping us out in crunch time), and supporting us in every way possible. Although we're a very young team, our alumni have been our biggest fans and we are forever indebted to the impact they have had on our team. Whether it was Ishaan and Partik flying from across the country to critique and help the team they raised from the ground compete or Nick spending hours making us the sickest intro video we've ever had, we could not have had the amazing weekend we had without you.

Again, any and all constructive criticism would really be appreciated!

Sincerely,
Raghav

so i typed the comments below while watching. overall i think you guys could easily improve exponentially next semester by focusing on a few little things. i mostly typed out criticisms below that came to mind while i was watching quickly, but please don't mistake that for me thinking that there wasn't anything positive to look at from your performance!

- when guys are doing dhamaal legs (i noticed this in saaps initially) make sure you are picking your knees up and not kicking your legs out

- props to orange girl for getting up on beat after the slide

- i think the fancy footwork at the end of the kaka rumaal song would hit harder to slower music, some people didn't seem to be keeping up

- i am usually against guy handing girl flower gimmicks, but it actually was a line in the song and you guys did it smoothly in the choreo so i liked it

- the guess gucci song's drop at the chorus should probably be changed to hit harder - there is alot of arm waving pre the drop, then you go into a single jhummar - i think you guys have the ability to do some cooler stuff

- like the use of people moving fast and slow at same time during the second song

- i personally have a pet peeve against people mixing dhamaal/sialkoti/double jhummar, but that's just me and idk what judges really care

- the phumania variations were nice, but it seemed like you did 3 different sets of phumania 16 counts in the same song - again i think your creativity could lend to a better drop of even simple hard hitting bhangra choreo

- for being an ending song, dushmani should probably be mixed with a heavier beat for the type of choreo you are doing -

- id leave the non-props mela people on stage/continuously dancing for the transition into mela, and tighten up the mela formation a bit so it hits harder

almost all of this is based off of how i personally view the set/performance, and im not saying you won't do well if you don't listen to anything listed above! just whatever quick critiques i could offer.

i think overall there were some points where dancers were trying to keep up to the mix and dance energetically, and just lost some of their footwork and base/core form. maybe for practice, slow the mix down a little bit and make sure you guys keep good posture and clean/straight arms, and gradually speed it up - or just do alot of run throughs of individual segments and build your muscle memory for doing things with perfect form so you hit it at end of set too.

good luck and kill it next semester! shout out to davis :)

So I thought I'd just throw some two cents in here.

1) Your yellow guy was dirty. If you guys are looking to standardize form, I think it should be around him personally. Great extensions and consistent energy. Other dancers showed flashes but toward the middle and end of the performance people were losing their bounce and their high knees.

2) Formations in this performance were weak. I know the struggles of making a really complex formation set for your first comp of the year but definitely a place where you guys could improve. It was a lot of condensing and breaking (kind of like us lol) and I have faith that you guys can do a lot more visually appealing stuff.

3) Inclusion of hard jhummar here didn't really flow for me. Maybe it was the mix or maybe something else but it seemed to be too abrupt of a transition into it. If you guys are gonna do it, I think you could either use some different songs or work on some buildup choreo so that it doesn't seem out of place.

4) Phumaniya form needs some work. Try to kick your legs out a bit more and really extend your arm as it is coming around. Maybe those are personal preferences but I think it would add to the execution.

5) Jugni segment mix was pretty dope. I thought the drop could have been executed better (orange dude was offbeat) and I think it would've worked better if you guys focused on modhe and getting low rather than moving. I'm sure you got that same critique from Miriam though because we did lol. Also if you are going to do a jugni segment that is that long, you have to kill it. When you build back up into the next drop, it needs to hit even harder. Whether you do that through formations, choreo, or execution is up to you but something has to hit hard again.

6) Couple songs before the mela scene didn't hit for me. Too much dancing in place for moves that you can move really far with. Also you weren't really at the front of the stage so the hype factor wasn't there as much. Decent choreo but nothing crazy. People are looking gassed.

7) Mela scene was fucking hype live. It was just jumps but that girl in the middle DESTROYED it and it was well executed.

I know most of these critiques were negative but the improvement from last year was huge. I think you guys still have a ways to go this year (as we all do) but for a first semester comp this was pretty good. Good luck with everything
