Steps to Creating a Mix - Help!

Hey Guys,

-I often browse BTF in my spare time but have recently just joined in on the discussion. This is my very first post. Sorry if I break any rules etc.-

I have been searching the forums but I found nothing on the topic about what the mixers here on BTF do when creating there mixes from scratch (steps wise). I am, as you probably guessed, looking to make my own mixes, and this question really intrigued me.

So, what do you guys normally do from start to finish? Here would be an example of what I am looking for...

Example:
1. Download latest SFX and loops that I can find from x y z.
2. Listen to songs and figure out which songs will sound good together and then dance to these songs to figure out when and where to cut them to my liking.
3. Open a new project file in program of your choice
4. Lay down the songs in there raw forms and then cut them
5. Lay down dhol loops underneath songs.
6. Lay down tumbi, then tabla, then etc...

and the list goes on.... Etc..

Please be Specific!!!!

Thanks,

Its not easy as just following certain steps. It must be clear in your mind what you want to do. Its the same thing i when designing.

1. Download latest SFX and loops that I can find from x y z.- I just use google and BTF to be honest. 2. Listen to songs and figure out which songs will sound good together and then dance to these songs to figure out when and where to cut them to my liking.-this is imprtant when making mash up and such. 3. Open a new project file in program of your choice- Dont really get what your asking? IN ACID is just a blank UI and you drag and drop tracks, loops, etc etc4. Lay down the songs in there raw forms and then cut them-
5. Lay down dhol loops underneath songs.6. Lay down tumbi, then tabla, then etc...

4-6: This cant be formulated. It all has to come from your imagination/creativity of the mind. Mixing is also a lot of trial and error.

Thanks for the response man,

I am aware that mixing comes from the imagination, and it is clear in my mind as to what I want accomplished. However, I still feel like there is a general game plan that mixers use or that at least I feel that I could really use to keep myself on track and essentially have a bunch of smaller goals to accomplish.

Lets see what else people post as well :)

what i do, is open up ACID. GO through my song library, pick a song try this try that, if it fail scratch it and pick another song. Its all trial and error.

to be honest, a lot of mixers are not going to post their processes here, because they're basically trade secrets.

that being said, the list you have in your original post is pretty solid. you could, using that, make a pretty good mix.
