Your "style" is not at fault. I am assuming that your "form" is, especially if others tell you that your arms go everywhere.

Form, according to me, is how you position your body at any point. Grace, which is something else that you may need to work on, is how you transition from Point A to Point B. Grace is much more difficult to fix, but you can dramatically improve your form by:

A) Working out a bit. If you have more muscle, you will be able to better control your motions.

B) stretch out on a daily basis. If you are stiff, your form and grace will suffer!

C) Emulate other people's form. I have improved dramatically and I continue to improve simply by watching others and do moves the way they do them.

D) Most importantly, PRACTICE in front of a mirror. Let me say that one more time. PRACTICE in front of a mirror. One more time. PRACTICE in front of a mirror. Learn from your mistakes and strive to improve yourself.

How long have you been dancing? Are you just starting out? Your friends didn't articulate themselves very effectively as "awkward" is not very specific and can mean a number of things...but from what I have gathered it sounds like your form and move execution is off. I can try to help you to fix it but would need to watch a vid...so if have vids up you can pm me & I can give you some feedback if you'd like. But overall, all anyone can really suggest is to practice more. Watch bhangra vids and practice moves in front of a mirror. It will take months of work but improvements will come with time :D

It took me awhile to learn form and style properly - I was not a dancer by any stretch until I got to college. I think Kinnell and Remy hit it on the head - watch videos and practice in front of mirror. I don't think you should try to focus on completely emulating the steps early on. Just get a feel for it and lay your foundation. Once you're there, you should then start looking at the details. Don't get discouraged, it takes time for the style and execution to feel natural. ;)
