What is your budget, and your overall goal?
My opinion is to use seperate components, ie. a surround sound amplifier, seperate dvd/bd player, seperate cd player etc etc... ALl in one units pack great value, for 300-500 USD you can get an 5.1/6.1 system with dvd/bd etc etc... But here's the problem, everything must run through one unit which is prone to failure... These units are very small and pack a lot of ambient temperature...
Last year for thanksgiving I gave my mother in law a full HD overhaul... New HDTV along with an all in one surround unit... Here DVD player stopped reading discs and we had to send it in for repair... However, to do this we had to rewire the entire system to re-route sound to the tv as opposed to the surround receiver...
Other things to note is brand name... I used to be a firm believer in SONY, for their value and features... All 3 of my SONY amplifiers have transformers that went bad after the warranty was out... What's that mean? It means certain speakers would cut in and out, which was annoying as hell... I have since then upgraded to Denon Surround Receivers and I can't believe what I've been missing... Not only is more picture cleaner, the sound is day/night, using the same speakers I already had...
So, always take your time and purchase the right component instead of rushing and buying something cheaper that you may have to replace... Most audiophiles will give high remarks on Denon equipment...
Another thing to note is HDMI upconversion... This is a feature that will make your life very easy if being used with a HDTV... In the past, you had to run multiple wires from your surround receiver to your tv... Composite, Svideo, HDMI... Nowadays, these surround amplifiers have 1080 upconverter chips built in, making all inputs feed out through HDMI... This means you only have 1 wire running from your amplifier to your tv...
If you can tell me your overall goal, I can try and help pick good quality cost effective components...
