I'm young and still very new to the circuit, but as part of a collegiate team with less experience than most of the teams in the circuit, I think we find it very difficult to teach brand new dancers formations without markers, as they're still focusing on learning the many elements & technique of the dance form itself. It becomes hard for them to mentally juggle formations solely relative to the rest of the team while still keeping the moves as true to form as they possibly can.

For what it's worth, of all the vids I've seen of the best teams on the circuit, I can say that I do think a performance without stage markers is an impressive feat of team cohesion. At a higher level of dance, a performance without markers is very executable, and probably should be preferred, but I'm keeping teams like mine in my thoughts when I say that markers act as a form of training wheels for dancers who haven't fully internalized how to do most moves in bhangra, keeping them a bit more focused.

Sorry if i'm just beating a dead horse here. I saw the thread get bumped, read through it, and wanted to offer my perspective. Let me know what you think.

Don't take this in the wrong way but if a dancer needs markers on stage because of lack of experience, i don't think that individual is ready for a competition, make the individual do performances at parties and events to gain experience! Just me 2 cents no hate intended!

No, that definitely does make sense, and you're right in a lot of ways. It's just that we do want to give the experience that a competition brings to our team. It's some of the most memorable weekends of our college careers and I don't want to deprive my friends/teammates of that. Definitely having those dancers do gigs and stuff is part of the training process.

As it is, we have a pretty small team and not a lot of people to train younger dancers/gigs where we aren't as concerned about performance, so generally in the interest of time, we teach them moves and formations in the context of markers so they can in a way "hit the ground running". If you have any tips for developing good habits without the need for markers, I'm definitely open to them!

Yea dude my bad, I got bored.

Honestly use as many markers as you want. If a rubric or competition doesn't care, no judge can dock you points for it. If a certain judge does, put them on blast and let the circuit know. It is a competition's decision and a judge must follow the rubric.

Good luck with everything in the future homie!

Appreciate it! I actually was very interested in reading about it - and we'll do our best. Thanks!
