All is real. Dudes nuts. Work ethic is amazing. Take the time to watch it if you can.

You know..I used to be a HUGE lil wayne fan...slowly, but surely...I began to see his lyrics for what they are...a bunch of clever metaphors and little or no depth...I actually feel dumber after listening to him nowadays....makes sense since he is retarded 24/7...If you go back and read my old posts, particularly after The Drought 3 was released...I viciously defended Lil Wayne, but if you are looking for any kind of depth, he is worthless...No Ceilings is just a bunch of superficial metaphors and punch lines put together...granted, he is probably the BEST at putting together tons and tons of verses of just ridiculous little analogies and metaphors that make you say "ha thats clever"...but other than that...ehhh

He does have one thing going for him, which I think people seem to gravitate towards...is this "I'm an artist trapped in my own mind" which our popular media always seems to fall in love with it ( see kurt cobain, tupac shakur, etc..)...it is a shame that many children of the urban population look up to him...

P.S. I think it was Nikhil and Harman in particular that were trying to open my eyes back then...so here is my concession...I am no longer a Lil Wayne fan....and this documentary didn't do anything for me..but make me ask...why someone with so much money..is wasting his life away in the way that he is.

i disagree. lil wayne is in an easy 2nd behind jay z right now. In no ceilings he was fuckn around and it still sounded dope. You cant tell me carter 3 didnt have depth. this rapper might be on syrup, but his lyrical ability will never be matched.

easy 2nd behind jay-z in what? like current artists lyrical ability? dude, hes just on everyones stuff. I feel EXACTLY like jeeti does, hes clever, he's quick, but wheres the depth beyond that? i love jamming to him, but lyrical ability? i mean if rap has become simply about who can come up with the whittiest metaphors or 2 liners, sure, hes on top. Real lyrical ability? see the BET cipher i posted a while back. THAT is lyrical ability.

If you guys want to talk about depth, PAC and biggie are dead. Jay z has depth and it can't be compared. Wayne has a different style, but when he wants to be serious he can.name a more succesful rapper in the game of late. Jayz is 1 Wayne is 2. And as far as depth eminem and nas don't make shit anymore. I admit wayne makes some bullshit, but he be fuckn around.

Nas is the best mainstream rapper out there right now. Wayne is wtvers really, I don't see why everyone is on his nuts. Dude sounds like a crack baby who got dropped one too many times.

Just like its unwise to go all crazy over some modern bhangra team without understanding the long tradition that existed before them, same goes with hip hop. If you only know of artists (and that too only Rappers! not counting the turntablists, spoken word artists, and bboys who revolutionized the culture), that existed from 1997-present, or worse, post 2002, then I suggest you do some research before you start thinking Weezy is the best MC of all time. For starters:

*Watch the documentary Style Wars. The film has nothing about rappers but is all about Hip Hop culture and the spirit of NY in the 80s that was Hip Hop before it grew to the globalized behemoth it is today. Its seriously about a scene as small as our's with bhangra and all, how it was so grassroots before hip POP took over.

*Get the revolutionary singles (and if u develop a taste, then even the albums) of Afrika Bambata and the Soulsonic Force, Grandmaster Flash, KRS ONE and Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. and Rakim, NWA, Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Wu Tang Clan to understand the evolution of raw hip hop.

*Understand the variety of underground hip hop and how poetic and enlightening the songs can be. Sage Francis, Immortal Technique, Slug from Atmosphere===> all these guys will blow your mind and show what exactly hip hop can do (more than just silly one liners and dance songs)

im no expert on hip hop so thats just my two cents but I really think its a necessary education before one can try to make an opinion as preposterous that Lil Wayne is the best MC out there right now.

thank you.

i was not a lil wayne fan at all, as i grew up on the rappers listed here, and saw through his bs immediately. the one thing that i can admit to is that i do admire his insatiable work ethic, and while i may not agree with what he is putting out, the fact that he is working himself to death should be an inspiration to anyone. i know for me, i watched the doc a couple weeks ago sometime before my last block exams and finals, and it motivated me to work harder.

but im so happy that varun mentioned the originators of rapping (not hip hopping) above. two of my favorite albums from this year are from two throwbacks, raekwons only built for cuban linx part 2, and rakims the seventh seal. take any track off any of those albums, and there is more lyrical depth and meaning in that one cut than multiple albums out there now. even though i remember varun once saying, can you relate to raekwons story of slinging crack and coke, i know from experience in my own life, i can relate to that more so than flying around around in a g5 and pouring cristal on bitches. fans of rap, listen to the lyrics and follow the stories told my these guys.
