i might be mistaken but i rmr seeing something very similar to wats in faizan's picture when I was in punjab (gurdaspur). it was outside a pagri shop nd there were freshly dyed paggs hangin off it. this was like 6 yrs ago. idk if its the same thing, but this picture reminded me of that.

lol yeah, thats what i thought it was, a support for an awning...it was just tripping me out though cus it looked like a saap just laying on a car hood or something, with the awning being a reflection

Here's my theory...the mechanism of a saap is multi-purpose...saap like mechanisms are employed to support awnings (as seen in the picture), work as gates and shutters (if u go to punjab, most of the shutters look like saaps), and also work great to hang clothes. From this, one can deduce that the first person who used a saap in dance did it very arbitrarily and innocently...

i don't think there was a conscious effort on the part of the first user of a saap to use it as a dancing tool, they were probably just stoned and thought it was fun, haha...They probably picked up the mechanism in some other form, and used it...

the saap mechanism is pretty basic and has probably been around forever, so essentially, the saap mechanism was not created for bhangra, it was simply adapted for bhangra.
