Oh let me tell you about being Punjabi..

So, I'm at Costco with my mom the other day and yes we had our regular WEEKLY 12 gallon lineup.. the check out lady looks and asks why do your people always buy more than 4-5 gallons of milk do you guys bath in milk and my mom looks and goes Yes, yes we do! And she's like wow thats why you guys are so white and she goes no were white because we drink so much tea thats what the milk is for silly lady. I died!

Yes, we have 2 fridges, a kitchen in the back yard so our house doesn't smell but after the first few months of going in and out the outside kitchen is never used so I do go to school smelling like Tarkha.

We have about a million shoes in our garage. NEVER inside you'll get killed for that. Yes, we have a bhabaji picture in every room and a special room/area dedicated to prayers. Yes, we have ETC Punjabi and watch Jabji sahib every morning (at least the rents do) The first thing we all learned how to make was Cha.. ROTI is still a struggle... and we hate making tharka BUT, our parties are HELLA cracking...and the event isn't over until the day after when all the shit talking has been done...and even when you think its over an aunty calls to gossip about another "OMG o kuri ne ah kita se" conversation... and we do call the night before to ask what everyones wearing if no ones wearing a sari then you damn well better wear a suit!

You grew up hearing all the punjabi cuss words you can imagine but are FORBIDDEN to discuss or even use them. Sex is not a conversation of discussion.... the fact that people kiss on TV you immediately change the channel or walk away...

We call all of our friends parents aunties and uncles and are best friends are our cousins... no matter what!

I dont know about the rest of you...but I can't wait to do this all over again in my next life! I <3 being Punjabi!

in my little town we have one store thats quite close to the gurdwara, so whenever we needed to make our 20+ gallon milk run, thas where we went. for the longest time the gori's working there would ask if we bathe in the milk (im sure everyone has been asked that question), we would reply no, its for a program (akand paath) at the gurdwara. after a cuple years of the same question, the gori's finally understood what the milk was for, one day (a cuple akand paaths later) my friend's and i walked in, and she asked if we were having a program since we made a 20+ gallon run. our reply, NO, its for our bath. The lady was like wtf ??? her expression was priceless. ;D

some of you might laugh, some might think its stupid, i though it was hilarious. try it, see how ure local clerk reacts.

How old are you?

Punjabi is not a race. It is a heritage.

Caucasian is a race, African-American is a race, Asian is a race, Hispanic is a race...

I know that wasn't the point of your topic...but it would behoove you to try a more educational approach.
race
2   /reɪs/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [reys] Show IPA
–noun
1. a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.
2. a population so related.
3. Anthropology.
a. any of the traditional divisions of humankind, the commonest being the Caucasian, Mongoloid, and Negro, characterized by supposedly distinctive and universal physical characteristics: no longer in technical use.
b. an arbitrary classification of modern humans, sometimes, esp. formerly, based on any or a combination of various physical characteristics, as skin color, facial form, or eye shape, and now frequently based on such genetic markers as blood groups.
c. a human population partially isolated reproductively from other populations, whose members share a greater degree of physical and genetic similarity with one another than with other humans.
4. a group of tribes or peoples forming an ethnic stock: the Slavic race.
5. any people united by common history, language, cultural traits, etc.: the Dutch race.

Pooja, you are using race in the sociological/anthropological definition, as that of a social construct. Only for the past 2 centuries has the word "race" been used in that format. Prior to that, you could refer to people as the Punjabi Race, the Jatt Race, etc, as a group of people.

People get all smart about Political Correctedness after taking a Intro to Anthro huh?

Around the same time period people also believed that the world was flat. Thanks to technology that has been disproved. Same thing goes for 'race'.  People did refer to ethnicity back in the day as a 'race'.  Most North Indians share the same genetic pool. So its pretty much invalid to separate them into Punjabi race, kashmiri race, etc. because terms like that have no bearing.
