OMG I can do this forever... but the BEST PART OF BEING PUNJABI...

When you meet another random aunty or uncle they will always ask the most important question:
-What Pind are you from?

WHYYY you dont know me... what does my pind have to do with anything?! Its soo funny...every time!

Yes, I stare I've accepted my handicap!

All New Years are spent at the gurdwara!

And, whenever theres a punjabi on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa or the like we root for them even if they can't sing or perform! (Thats right Rohan I wanted you to win!)

Okay, I'm done!

Oh let me tell you about being Punjabi..

So, I'm at Costco with my mom the other day and yes we had our regular WEEKLY 12 gallon lineup.. the check out lady looks and asks why do your people always buy more than 4-5 gallons of milk do you guys bath in milk and my mom looks and goes Yes, yes we do! And she's like wow thats why you guys are so white and she goes no were white because we drink so much tea thats what the milk is for silly lady. I died!

Yes, we have 2 fridges, a kitchen in the back yard so our house doesn't smell but after the first few months of going in and out the outside kitchen is never used so I do go to school smelling like Tarkha.

We have about a million shoes in our garage. NEVER inside you'll get killed for that. Yes, we have a bhabaji picture in every room and a special room/area dedicated to prayers. Yes, we have ETC Punjabi and watch Jabji sahib every morning (at least the rents do) The first thing we all learned how to make was Cha.. ROTI is still a struggle... and we hate making tharka BUT, our parties are HELLA cracking...and the event isn't over until the day after when all the shit talking has been done...and even when you think its over an aunty calls to gossip about another "OMG o kuri ne ah kita se" conversation... and we do call the night before to ask what everyones wearing if no ones wearing a sari then you damn well better wear a suit!

You grew up hearing all the punjabi cuss words you can imagine but are FORBIDDEN to discuss or even use them. Sex is not a conversation of discussion.... the fact that people kiss on TV you immediately change the channel or walk away...

We call all of our friends parents aunties and uncles and are best friends are our cousins... no matter what!

I dont know about the rest of you...but I can't wait to do this all over again in my next life! I <3 being Punjabi!
My jaw dropped...You are my hero..you took the words out of my mouth.
Can you be my official spokesperson from today on? ;D

I luv this the mostttt.....I remember when I was little having to call my parents moms/dads mr. and mrs. w/e......it felt sooooo awkwarddd especially if ud be there a lot and then ur white friends come over and say thanks for the dinner mrs. luthra (and my mom goes wtff).....I like that we dont use last names and are really informal like we've known everyone for centuriesss

i've never faced the staring situation, cept in india, but I hate hate hateeee when an aunty tells you that you're too skinny and you look weak!!! you need to eat!!! there's no meat on ur bone....look at urself just a bunch of bones.. and they add more and more food on ur plate!! and it goes to waste

We call those "Surrey Jacks" Romeos around here. You know the type...Jazzy B hair, sunglasses at night, big Khanda necklace, blast Rambo when they pull into the Gurudwara parking lot, go to parties and stare down girls with creepy behavior, cheap tattoos and an affinity to act "hard" even while you know full well they come from a perfectly nice family. Gotta love 'em.

Yeah didn't your mom put oil in your hair as a kid... I know my mom did... and when we were little she would be like just rub it in your hair we'll wash it out when we get home... Now I make sure that I get parshad on the napkin... No need to freak out its just oil!

How old are you?

Punjabi is not a race. It is a heritage.

Caucasian is a race, African-American is a race, Asian is a race, Hispanic is a race...

I know that wasn't the point of your topic...but it would behoove you to try a more educational approach.
race
2   /reɪs/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [reys] Show IPA
–noun
1. a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.
2. a population so related.
3. Anthropology.
a. any of the traditional divisions of humankind, the commonest being the Caucasian, Mongoloid, and Negro, characterized by supposedly distinctive and universal physical characteristics: no longer in technical use.
b. an arbitrary classification of modern humans, sometimes, esp. formerly, based on any or a combination of various physical characteristics, as skin color, facial form, or eye shape, and now frequently based on such genetic markers as blood groups.
c. a human population partially isolated reproductively from other populations, whose members share a greater degree of physical and genetic similarity with one another than with other humans.
4. a group of tribes or peoples forming an ethnic stock: the Slavic race.
5. any people united by common history, language, cultural traits, etc.: the Dutch race.

Pooja, you are using race in the sociological/anthropological definition, as that of a social construct. Only for the past 2 centuries has the word "race" been used in that format. Prior to that, you could refer to people as the Punjabi Race, the Jatt Race, etc, as a group of people.

People get all smart about Political Correctedness after taking a Intro to Anthro huh?

LMAO 12 gallon line-up!!!
So I remember a few years ago we had a akandh path at the gurdwara and we ran out of milk for kheer....so my mom tells me to go get 20 gallons STAT...i go to the nearest conveinent store and I start loading up the gallons and one of the store workers comes and pleads with me to not take all his milk!! he was all "this is all we have until monday maam, please leave some for the other customers" I was just dying when he said that bc everybody was staring at me and laughing...I took all his milk anyways BOOYAH!! but yes I aggree with you "dhud" is very important in a desi house. I remember my dad would go to the store at like 5 a.m. for milk because hell hath no fury like the Grewal house without milk in the morning

ohh and another thing...why do always try to bargain??? I'm guilty of this too..but I know if my mom goes shopping with me at an indian store the "store price" is def. not EVER ACCEPTABLE and you must try to bid with the indian owner. So funny...the suit will be priced at $150 and my mom will argue with the lady till she says its only $75 and then she won't even get it!! LMAO being desi is awsome

The funny thing is that 2 fridges aren't enough...they need to buy a separate freezer for loads of paneer, frozen saag, bags of green peas and mixed vegies, peeled udrakh and lasaan, and anything that was on sale at your local grocery stores.

One thing i hate is when aunties just need to expose your scene when you have house jams every night for a month straight and go into detail about it (khuriyaan raath rekhay gaiyaan neh, cigrette thay daru peendhay see...etc.) trying to make their kids look like angels in your parents eyes.

Ahhh, I'm with you on this one. I went to one of my friends wedding reception and I was the only one wearing a sari, oh well, dancing in a sari is a whole diff experiece, if we mess up, we can be like oh meri sari pehra vich ah gaye si. hahaha. love love love it. the things that i'm not very fond of are smelling like turdka, parents having different standards for guys and girls (my family is all for equal rights), the super early curfews compared to my non-Punjabi friends, how desi guys act all hard. what i love is the fact our weddings/parties are so much fun and last so long, how close our families are (yes at one point we love our cousins/aunts/uncles and at another we hate them, but hey we're family), how a lot of us are really loud, our traditions and our culture =)
