Tip Money

Whenever there is a baraat that i am playing dhol at, and money is thrown, the money is said to be the dholi's. But for some reason i get frustrated or angry whenever people don't respect the dholi and they treat them like filthy strippers. They'll command the dholi to like work for money or when its on the ground they'll make whistle sounds or other types of sounds and point at the money and tell you to go pick it up in a very aggravating way. Am i just weird or does this happen to other people? Should i feel this way or does it come with the job?

if anyone treats you like a filthy stripper u just gotta grab em and put em in a headlock, why do u think no one ever bothers richie?
usually at gigs the dj's have a helper who picks up the money and the djs have an agreement with the dholis for how the money is split or whatever. next time talk to whoever sets up the gig and tell em to designate someone to pick up the money.

just stop playing and leave the set. I mean if the money means that much, then keep playing by all means, but if anyone did that to me id sauck them in the face. If there going to act like moral cowards then you dont necessarily have to oblige them with entertainment.

Just like hardeep said the tip money is mostly picked up by the helper during the baraat, if there isnt a helper you can always go back and pick the money up, talk to the dj whos doing the gig to come upon a agreement as how the tip money is split and who will pick it up, its usually split between the dj and dholi in cases of when i have gigs, and if you have a few bucks around, just stick them between your ropes on the dhol it helps letting people know where to put tips

welcome to doing gigs...unfortunately it comes with it usually If these dudes are insisting on me picking it up MID BARAAT or dancefloor then I just gesture them to put it on my drum. worst is the drunk assholes and the stupid little kids and uncles that want to play your dhol and that besura family dholi at the gig that thinks he can out play you when he can`t even get chaal down properly let alone pull off a clean roll or tirakit

Lol im not new to doing gigs bud, its just, like you all said, theres usually someone to pick up the money. In this case there was no one and the dj had nothing to do with it, it was just me leading the baraat into the hall. they didn't ask me to pick it up mid baraat it was to go pick it up after the baraat. Which is fine and all but the way they said it made me want to pick it up and just burn it infront of them. The worst is those drunk uncles who put the money in their mouth (which is always a very low denomination from the start) and they expect you to take it out with your mouth. Those guys are the reason why i want to destroy their entire gene pool. i've felt this way for the longest time i just didn't know who else to ask about it.

speaking of drunk uncs there was this one gig where surjit sagar came and did some boliyan and sang one of his songs...in between boliyan these idiot uncles are say sing this song and that song...i seen some singers at weddings suck up to it and the song drunk uncs want them to but he literally said "mitro mera mood khushi da hoya, don`t ruin the party" the same uncles were literally carried out because they were literally falling down drunk about a half hour after surjit sagar sang. nice guy though.

Although I know I'm resurrecting this from the dead, I didn't want to clutter the boards with a new post.

I have been doing gigs for about 5 years in the Northwest US and have routinely worked with the same DJs with whom I always split the tip money in some fashion. Recently I have been doing gigs with many new DJs who just take all the money and shove it in some hidden bag. I assumed that money would be split at the end of the night but apparently thats not the case. Has anybody else ran into this problem?

Secondly, I have had a few instances with people not paying after the party or not paying the full amount (don't have cash on me, call me tomorrow, etc...) How do you guys get around this?

I haven't had that problem yet with people telling me to pick money off the floor. I usually have it put on my dhol or even in my pocket during playing. If money is thrown on the ground, someone usually comes around to give it to me afterwards. I don't ever pick up money off the floor though. This one time I had an uncle sprinkle money over me while I was playing, I only took whatever money that landed on my dhol adn the rest that fell on the ground, I left it there.

Keep in mind, I play dhol because I love to play it. The money is just an added bonus.
